Horst Richardson, men’s soccer head coach, joined an exclusive group on Sept. 26 when he picked up career victory No. 500. Sadly, he wasn’t around to enjoy it. While the Tigers defeated the University of Dallas, 40, at CC’s Stewart Field, Richardson was approximately 1,500 miles away near Chicago, attending the funeral of Chris Quon ’09, a former player who passed away September 19.

“I’m happy about achieving the milestone,” Richardson said, “But I wish I could enjoy it under different circumstances.”

Richardson joins Ohio Wesleyan’s Jay Martin (557), Keene State’s Ron Butcher (545) and Rowan’s Dan Gilmore (514) as the only Division III coaches to reach the milestone. Five other coaches at the Division I and II levels also have 500 career victories.

“I’ve had such a wonderful time at Colorado College working with these splendid young men. It’s been a great home for Helen and me. Now I can continue without pressure, working with these great players and achieving other goals,” Richardson said. Richardson has taken his team on an international tour. The

Tigers spent seven days training with E.C. Vitoria, a first. Thanks to a 52 victory over the University of Texas-El Paso in the regular-season finale on Oct. 30, the women’s soccer team finished second in the Conference USA standings and earned a bye for the first round of the league playoffs. Junior forward Tiffany Brown and senior defender Lauren Talbot earned first-team all-league honors, while seniors Ericka Baer and Emily Beans received CUSA all-academic recognition.

Jason Lammers

Jason Lammers

The CC hockey team added Jason Lammers and Terry Kleisinger to its coaching staff for the 200910 season. Lammers, whose decade of coaching experience includes stints with four other Division I programs, spent the previous three years at Ohio State. Kleisinger returns to the Tigers as a volunteer coach, working primarily with the goaltenders, after serving in a similar capacity from 2000 through 2004. A former standout at the University of Wisconsin, he helped backstop the Badgers to two NCAA championships in the early 1980s.

Former hockey standout Doug Palazzari ’74 is among five individual inductees scheduled to enter the Colorado Springs Sports Hall of Fame in November as members of the HOF’s 10th Anniversary Class of 2009.

Women’s Volleyball

The volleyball team earned its 12th consecutive berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament, and for the first time in the program’s history, will be the top seed in its regional.

Unfortunately, a 33-4 overall record and No. 1 ranking in the West Region was not enough for CC to be selected as host of the seven-team regional. Instead, the Tigers will travel to Redlands, Calif., where the University of Redlands will serve as host.

CC is making its 19th overall appearance in the NCAA Tournament, where the Tigers own an 818 alltime record.

CC finished second in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference regular-season standings with a 122 record in league play. The Tigers also finished second at the SCAC Championship, defeating host Oglethorpe University and DePauw University before falling to No. 12ranked Southwestern University in the finals.

Men’s Lacrosse

Guy Van Arsdale, one of the most respected coaches in collegiate men’s lacrosse, took the Colorado College helm in late July. Van Arsdale brings more than 20 years of experience to the program, including the last five as an assistant at Penn State University and 11 previous ones (1989-2000) as head coach at Rochester Institute of Technology.
