1935 – ‑Edith Hiskey Brown, April 16, in Denver. Poet, writer, hiker, square dancer, art lover, Edith was a member of the Barnes Society. She is survived by her son, Steve, and daughter, Roz McCain. She was preceded in death by her husband, Oliver.

1938 – ‑Robert Branscomb “Buster” Keeton, Jan. 25, in Austin, Texas. He played football at CC and entered flight training for the Navy after graduation. He was one of 100 pilots picked to form the American Volunteer Group and flew for 38 years. His wife, Metha Holm, predeceased him. He received many distinctions for his work, including induction into the Airman Hall of Fame in Midland, Texas, in 2010.

1939 – ‑Mary Pollard Wheeler, Feb. 28, in Taos, N.M. She worked for the National Society for Crippled Children and Adults and had a career in public health. Son Robert survives.

1941 – ‑Robert “Bob” Bartlett, May 23, Colorado Springs. Bob was a noted building contractor, having key roles in the building of the U.S. Air Force Academy and the Garden of the Gods Club. As a student at CC, Bob was a class officer and a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. He was the goalie on the first Tiger hockey team and remained an avid CC hockey alumnus throughout his life. Bob was active in the Fifty Year Club, and was a member of both the Tiger Pride Club and the Barnes Society. Survivors include his children, Wendy and Kent, and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister, Agnes Bartlett Brueggeman-Kanaly ’39.

1943 – ‑Jane E. Dreusicke Patterson, Oct. 11, 2010, in West Liberty, Ohio. She volunteered at the Vermillion County War Museum. Survivors include two sons, David and John; and two daughters, Penny Stout and Connie. Her husband, Arthur, predeceased her.

1943 – ‑Arthur Ben Slack Jr., Jan. 13, in Carlsbad, Calif. At CC, he was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity and the varsity tennis team. He served in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam before retiring from the Marine Corps in 1968. He also owned a computer programming business in San Diego. Survivors include wife Jane, and children Ellen and Eric; and a sister, Carolyn Slack Walker ’52. Son John predeceased him, along with his parents, Hermine S. Slack ’21 and Arthur B. Slack Sr. ’17; an aunt, Celestine Greene ’19; and a cousin, Laurence Whitridge Greene ’45.

1943 – ‑Edward B. Liddle Jr., Feb. 9, in Colorado Springs. After graduation from University of Colorado Medical School, he served in the Army and participated in one of the first open-heart surgeries in history. He spearheaded a successful effort to make seatbelt use mandatory. Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Johnson Liddle ’43; children Gretchen Abernathy, Dave, and Greg; and a cousin, Douglas Hannah ’68.

1944 – ‑Donald L. Myers, March 1, in Santa Rosa, Calif. He joined the Navy during World War II and worked in aviation. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Christine; sons Donald and James; and daughter Christine Nelson. Predeceasing him was a sister, Dorothy Myers Bron ’45.

1945 – ‑Catherine Howard Cornelia Schneider Coleman Walker, affectionately known as “Grandma Moon,” March 22, in Binghamton, N.Y. She was a tennis star, dedicated to the Girls Club, and a talented musician. Seven children and four step-children survive. Husband Lawrence Coleman predeceased her.

1946 – ‑Susan Schenck Watson, Jan. 10. Son David survives.

1947 – ‑George I. W. Long, Jan. 26, in Billings, Mont. At CC, he was team manager for the Tigers hockey team, and he met his wife, Bernice Todd. They were married at Shove Chapel in 1946 and had three children, Rebecca, Joyce, and Robin, who survive. George worked as a field mapper and oil well sitter and served in the Marine Corps. His wife of 55 years preceded him in death. Three children survive.

1947 – ‑Martha Anne Barton Milne, April 26, in Denver. She earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from CC and was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. She met her husband, Charles Milne ’44, at CC and volunteered for the Colorado Historical Society. Survivors include sons Charles Jr. and Christopher; daughters Karen Pryor ’71 and Hilary Skufca; 10 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

1947 – ‑Mary Blunt Henson, March 24, in Sacramento, Calif. Husband, Jack ’47, predeceased her. Survivors include eight children, Laurel, Mark, Kathy, Robin, Mary Polly, Joel, Abby, and John. She was a teacher, devoted to family and church, and selfless volunteer.

1948 – ‑Lyle J. Vernon, Nov. 1, 2010, Lee’s Summit, Mo. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and a first lieutenant in the Marine Corps and served in the South Pacific during World War II. Survivors include wife Mary Jane and children Terry, Polly, and Bruce.

1949 – ‑Charles E. Ryan, March 3, in Colorado Springs. He joined the Navy at age 16 and earned an accounting degree from CC, then pursued a sales career. His wife, Lovella, survives. His first wife, Doris Parker, predeceased him.

1949 – ‑John “Alexander” Egger, Jan. 22. Wife Rosemary predeceased him. Three children, Joan, Karen, and Tom, survive.

1950 – ‑Herbert Tinsman Siebert, March 14, in Geneva, Ill. The Colorado Springs native and World War II veteran was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. He is survived by his wife, Jean Evans Siebert ’52; three children, and five grandchildren.

1950 – ‑Kedrick Griffith “K.G.” Freyschlag, March 4, in Colorado Springs. After earning a master’s degree from Stanford University, he taught journalism at CC and became director of public relations for the college. He later had a career in banking and was involved with the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo for 25 years. Survivors include his wife, Karen Phillips; children Griffith, Sharon, and Jeffrey. His late spouse, Barbara Anson Freyschlag ’52, also attended CC.

1950 – ‑Dorothy “Dottie” Edelman, April 10, in Elko, Nev. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in teaching from CC, taught school and became a counselor for graduating cadets at the Air Force Academy. Survivors include daughter Sheri and sons Doug, Steven, Jeff, and Gary.

1950 – ‑Valley Heisler Ellingsen, April 12, in Kalispell, Mont. Valley was a formidable tennis player, a senior Olympian champion, and a world traveler. Survivors include daughters Kristine and Peggy.

1950 – ‑Edith Auld Crie, July 6, 2010, in Lynchburg, Va. Survivors include sons J. Stanley and Robert and daughter Virginia. Edith was an avid author, woodworker, water lover, and bridge player. Husband Leslie Crie ’50, predeceased her.

1950 – ‑Doris Peterson Riviere, Aug. 27, 2010. Her husband, Roy, died on March 12, 2011.

1951 – ‑Phil Shanahan, Sept. 19, 2010, in Albuquerque. He was a retired accountant and auditor for the U.S. Department of Energy. His wife, Charline, survives.

1951 – ‑Betty Ball Hees, March 8, in Spring Hill, Fla. She taught in Pasadena and Los Angeles. Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Art; and sons Randy and Dan.

1951 – ‑Jean Begun Andersen, Nov. 28, 2010. Husband, Robert; and brother George Begun ’43, predeceased her.

1951 – ‑Burleson Davis White, January, in Beachwood, Ohio. Survivors include his wife, Eleanor; and children Susan, William, and Martha.

1951 – ‑Paul Biddle Steahlin, Jan. 3. Paul was a Beta Theta Pi fraternity member. Wife Beatrice survives, as well as three children and two step-children.

1952 – ‑Hugh “Jerry” Graham, May 13, in Greeley, Colo. President of Sigma Chi fraternity, Jerry graduated cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. He worked for Humble-Exxon as a petroleum geologist. Survivors include his first wife, Jane Wallace Dillard ’53; son Hugh; and daughters Shannon Dillard Mitchell ’80, Sharon, and Ginny. His granddaughter, Emma Mitchell ’12, is a current CC student. His wife, LouAnn, preceded him.

1952 – ‑Gloria Shabouh Lees, March 27, in Colorado Springs. She was a financial services coordinator. Four children survive.

1953 – ‑Angela Ofenheim McManus, Dec. 17, 2010, in Southern California. Born in Hague, Holland, Angela married her college sweetheart, Robert L. McManus ’51. Survivors include their children: Robert, Susan, and James.

1954 – ‑Walter “Wally” Brooks, March 28, in Colorado Springs. He and his wife, Harriet Goodman ’49, founded Friends of Tutt Library and were founding members of CC’s Southwest studies program. He also was an 1874 Society and Barnes Society member. Wally served in World War II as a captain in the U.S. Air Force. He also was a home builder, and his company built more than 600 homes in Colorado Springs. In addition to his wife, children Mark and Judy survive.

1954 – ‑Marilou Diemer Brown, Jan. 8, in Austin, Texas. Children Robert and Patrick survive.

1955 – ‑Helen Stott Spencer, Feb. 18, 2011, in Peabody, Maine. She earned a master’s degree in music from CC and founded and directed the Pioneer Valley Symphony Chorus. Her husband, Chaloner, preceded her in death. The couple had owned a catering service in Conway, Maine. Survivors include son Anthony.

1956 – ‑Elsie Huebsch, February, in Colorado Springs. She survived polio as a child and received treatment at the same facility as President Franklin D. Roosevelt. She taught at Broadmoor Elementary School and later tutored children in etiquette.

1956 – ‑Nancy Drexler Sponseller, March 5, in Richland, Wash. She was a retired secretary for the Department of Energy, Inspector General. Her husband, Ronald Sponseller ’53, survives.

1957 – ‑Lee Hammond Simus, Dec. 9, 2010, in Calgary. Survivors include husband Jeff Simus ’56; a daughter, Jennifer Hammond Fisher ’85; son Monty; and brother-in-law John Otto Simus ’64.

1958 – ‑Richard J. Nagel, Nov. 24, 2010, in Rochester, Minn. He was 84. He earned his master’s degree at CC and performed with the Hamburg Symphony, the Wiesbaden Symphony, and the Munich Philharmonic in Germany. In 1994, he retired from the Rochester Public Schools after 33 years of service.

1959 – ‑Charles R. Marshall, March 7, in Waverly, Ohio. A retired school teacher, Charles served in the Korean War in the Army in the 10th Mountain Division. Survivors include his wife, Doris Marcum Marshall, and a son, Robert. A daughter, Karenina Bianco, preceded him in death.

1961 – ‑Mary Hedrick Smith, Feb. 5, in Ithaca, N.Y. A Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority member, Mary was passionate about history, ballet, genealogy, literature, and libraries. Survivors include daughters Sandra, Stacey, Shelley Nisperos, and Stephanie Ashley.

1961 – ‑Angela De Salvo Biondi, April 1, in Spokane, Wash. Angela was a Spanish and Italian teacher in Pueblo who retired at the age of 81. The Beta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society honored her as Woman of the Year in 2007. Survivors include sons Raymond and Robert. Preceding her in death was her husband, Mike.

1961 – ‑Douglas Letts, Feb. 24, in Kansas City, Mo. He worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone and was music director and organist for Second Presbyterian Church. Survivors include his wife, Dana Rhodes ’64; and daughter, Leslie.

1961 – ‑June Hoikka Mindock, April 1, in Colorado Springs. Her husband, Stephen Mindock ’49, preceded her. Sons David, Peter, and daughter Stephanie survive. June worked as an editor, writer, and teacher.

1962 – ‑Thomas B. Hook, Feb. 8, in Lincoln City, Ore. He received a bachelor’s degree in business administration from CC and served in the Air Force National Guard for six years. He was a fourth-generation rancher. Survivors include his wife, Connie Longaker; and sons Theron and Tristan.

1962 – ‑DeWayne William Crumb, March 9, in Colorado Springs. A member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity, he spent 50 years educating, coaching, and officiating youth, and received many awards for his work. He is survived by his wife, Candace Hertneky ’62; daughters Brenda and Nancy; and mother Jerry.

1964 – ‑Irwin Warren, Dec. 11, 2010, in New Canaan, Conn. He had a 40-year advertising career and worked for the world’s largest agency, McCann Erickson. Brothers Adrian and Joel survive.

1964 – ‑Ivan D. Genuchi, Feb. 8, in Pikeville, Ky. He was one of the original members of the Air Force Band in Washington and tenor soloist in the Singing Sergeants. He earned a master’s degree in fine arts from CC and taught at Air Academy High School. Survivors include three children, Robert, Kevin, and Carol; his first wife, Mary; and his second wife, Vivian. Son Duane predeceased him.

1965 – ‑Karen Benson Spory, Feb. 5, in Brownsville, Texas. She taught science, foreign languages, and physical education at several schools in the United States and Germany. Her husband, Ralph, and sons David, Erick, and Christopher survive. Mother Gabrielle Benson ’41, predeceased her.

1965 – ‑Edgar Allen Cole, Jan. 8. He worked for the Department of Defense in overseas education. Survivors include wife Barbara, and children Jeri and Edgar.

1966 – ‑Richard E. Ward, March 21, in Colorado Springs. He earned a master’s degree at CC and taught at Air Academy High School for 25 years. He also taught Sunday school classes at four different churches. His wife, Audrey Lindal ’61 (bachelor’s degree) and ’71 (master’s degree); and three children survive.

1966 – ‑Virginia Northway Erdely, Jan. 2. Survivors include her husband, Maximilian, and children Maria Erdely Trujillo ’98 and David.

1970 – ‑Huston Diehl, Sept. 8, 2010. Survivors include her husband, Gerald Wetlaufer; daughter Susannah; step-daughters Jennifer Lewis Smith ’82 and Jamian; and stepson Daniel. She received her undergraduate degree at CC, and a master’s and Ph.D. in English from Duke University. She taught college, specializing in 16th- and 17th-century English literature and wrote numerous books. She loved the outdoors, the theater, and gardening.

1971 – ‑Estelle R. Lewis (MAT ’77), Brooklyn, N.Y., following a long illness. Formerly of Colorado Springs, Estelle was a longtimeteacher in Colorado Springs School District 11. She was a member of the Woman’s Educational Society, CC Friends of the Library, and taught in CC’s summer programs. She is survived by her sons, James ’79, Steve, and Mark. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Barton Lewis, and her sons, Richard ’75 and Robert ’80. Memorial gifts can be made to Colorado College for the Lewis Family Funds in her memory.

1972 – ‑Carol Robinson Nielsen, Feb. 1, in Denver.

1977 – ‑Cheryl Schlessman Bennett, April 9, Centennial, Colo. She graduated from CC with a degree in elementary education and was a board member of the Schlessman Family Foundation. She was an avid CC hockey fan and loved the outdoors. Survivors include her husband Bill; daughter Lauren Bennett Watel ’07; son Eric; son-in-law Ethan Watel ’07; parents Lee Schlessman ’50 and Dolores; sister Sandra Schlessman Garnett ’75; brother Gary; aunts Susan Schlessman Duncan ’52 and Diane Lanning Berberick ’55; and cousins Debra Lanning Angell ’74 and Michael Fredericks ’76. Grandparents Gerald Schlessman ’17 and Florence Fabling Schlessman ’21 predeceased her. 1979 – ‑Susan L. Forsberg, Feb. 27. She taught school for 19 years after the death of her husband, Oscar, and after earning her master’s degree in education from CC. Survivors include daughters Katherine and Jane.

1980 – ‑Carolyn Beth Otto, Feb. 7, in Colorado Springs. Author of 20 children’s books and National Geographic’s “Holidays Around the World” series. She worked at The Chinook Bookstore and enjoyed skiing, road trips, and water sports. Survivors include her mother, Janice and a brother, Stephen Pratt-Otto ’78.

1990 – ‑Michael “Mickey” Krupa, Feb. 17, at Denver Hospice Care Center. He taught Nordic skiing at Beaver Creek and climbed mountains. Survivors include his wife, Liz Espinosa; two sons, Spencer and Steven; sister Marissa ’97; brother John; and parents John and Margarita.

2003 – ‑Michael A. Pyszka, Nov. 30, in Wheat Ridge, Colo. After a brain tumor in 2005, Michael became a father-to-be, visited the pyramids and swam in the Dead Sea. At CC, he was Freeriders Union of Colorado College president. Survivors include his wife, Brie Henry Pyszka ’03, daughter Jillian Michael, brother Patrick, and parents Bob and Debi. The Michael A. Pyszka Memorial Fund has been established at any Colorado First Bank location.
