by Michael Szyliowicz ’85

It’s the subtitle of this alluringly named book that tells the rest of the story: “The Little Known History of the World’s Favorite Confection.” Szyliowicz traces the history of chocolate from its earliest usage in Central America to the introduction of the Hershey kiss in 1907 to its popularity as an aphrodisiac to its current infusion with chili peppers, wasabi, and other exotic flavors. The author is a chocolatier and owner of Mont Blanc Gourmet, a Colorado-based firm that supplies chocolate syrups and other gourmet items to coffee shops throughout the U.S. and overseas.
