1933 – Georgia Pickett Haupt, Dec. 11, 2012, in Denver, at age 101. After earning a degree in history from CC, she had a 35-year career as a school social worker and was active in the First Church of Christ, Scientist.

1939 – Helen Zick Walker, June 30, 2012, in Boca Raton, Fla. As a senior at CC, she met and married Bob Walker ’42. The couple celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary at The Broadmoor hotel, where they had gotten engaged. With a love for Colorado and the mountains, she went kayaking on her 90th birthday. Survivors include her husband, Bob; their children, Bob, Tom, Kathy Walker Gilbert ’71, and Jim Walker ’74; and a daughter-in-law, Mary Hickey ’74. A son, Stephen, predeceased her.

1941 – C. Ford White, Jan. 21. He graduated from CC magna cum laude with a psychology degree and was a member of the 1874 Society. Among survivors are his wife, Lucille; and a daughter, Patricia Powell.

1942 – Helen Louise Walberg Gilbert died recently in Houston, Texas. She was initiated into the Beta Delta Chapter of Delta Gamma in 1939 and continued her involvement in the N.W. Houston Alumni Chapter of Delta Gamma. Raised in Colorado Springs, Helen became a petroleum geologist with Tidewater Oil. She married a Texas oilman, raised two children, then returned to work as a lead geological draftsman with Cities Service Oil Co., until her retirement in 1989. Survivors include her children, John Gilbert III and Susan Gilbert; three grandchildren; a niece, Margaret Handke ’69, and her husband, Leigh Pomeroy ’70; and a sister, Lorimer Schaefer ’39. She was predeceased by her husband, John; siblings Richard O. Walberg ’46, Lillian Walberg Handke ’35, Genevieve Walberg Schaefer ’39, John Walberg Jr. ’45; brother-in-law A. Frederic Handke ’34; and a niece, Christine Handke ’73.

1943 – Robert Tredway Clark, Oct. 11, 2012, in Denver. He was 90. He spent 40 years as an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ in Vermont and St. Louis, Mo., and from 1952 to his retirement in 1987, pastored three churches in Denver. A civil rights and homeless advocate, he loved language, tennis, singing, and sunsets. Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Annabel Brake Clark; his son R. Douglas; and daughters Lee Anna, Eloise, and Christina. He was predeceased by sisters Mary Clark Watson ’30 and Elizabeth Clark Speer ’39.

1943 – John O. Westlund, Dec. 8, 2012, in Independence, Mo. He was 89. At CC, he played football and was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, where he trained B-17 pilots. He then worked as a salesman. Survivors include his wife, Lois; daughters Jill Westlund ’72 and Robin Abraham; and former spouse Jean Sutton Meyer ’47. He was predeceased by a brother, James Westlund ’51, sister-in-law Joan Westlund ’49 and a daughter, Karolyn Williams.

1943 – Richard Marcel “Dick” Chatterton Sr., Dec. 27, 2012, in St. Petersburg, Fla. During World War II, he was a member of the original Frogmen underwater demolition team, now the Navy Seals. He played pro football for the Chicago Bears, founded Florida Business Systems, and raised six children, who survive. His second wife, Marlene, also survives. His first wife of 56 years, Gloria, predeceased him.

1943 – Eva Hodges Watt, Oct. 3, 2012, in Denver. She was 90. She worked as a reporter and editor at the Denver Post for more than 40 years. An active volunteer for CC, she received the Lloyd E. Worner Award in 2000 for her loyalty, service, and generosity. Her husband, Tom, a fellow journalist, predeceased her. Survivors include her two sons, Joe and Rob Watt ’78. Her mother, Eva Dunlavy, graduated from CC in 1918.

1944 – Elizabeth Senger Moore, Jan. 13, on Bainbridge Island, Wash. She was 89. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority at CC and married Capt. Frank C. Moore, an attorney stationed at Camp Carson, Colo. He predeceased her. Survivors include her three children, James, Robert Moore ’72, and Suzanne Moore Pearce ’78.

1944 – Robert A. Clark, Dec. 19, 2012, in Cleveland, Ohio, from complications from pneumonia. He retired from Case Institute of Technology in 1985 as professor of mathematics. Survivors include his wife, Jane; and a cousin, Kiddy Kidder Wells ’51.

1946 – Phyllis Brothers Long, Sept. 26, 2012, in Colorado Springs, at age 87. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate with a magna cum laude degree in psychology, she met her future husband, Edward “Ted” Thornton Long ’44, at CC. They were married in Shove Chapel in 1947 and traveled the world with Ted’s job in the U.S. Foreign Service. She was active with the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. Survivors include a brother, Dwight Brothers ’51; three children, Stephen, David Long ’75, and Elizabeth Long Gifford ’75; nephews Bruce Welty ’79 and Russell Welty ’82; and a niece, Linda Welty Teves ’77. She was predeceased by her husband, Ted; a sister-in-law, Janice Welty ’48; and a brother, Donald Brothers ’43.

1946 – Ada “Robin” Ward Yates, Dec. 19, 2012, in Bedford, Mass. After graduating from CC with a degree in biology, she worked at the Pentagon while attending graduate school, married, and raised four sons in Harvard, Mass., and became a volunteer and avid bird watcher. Her former husband, G. Kenneth Yates, predeceased her.

1947 – Harold Francis Adair, died Oct. 26, 2012, in Boise, Idaho, at age 89. He was a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps. He joined the Marines the year he graduated from high school, in 1940, and attended CC from 1943 to 1945. Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Lorraine; their three sons, William, David, and James; and a daughter, Linda Walker.

1947 – Burnell T. Killion, Oct. 16, 2012, in Cheyenne, Wyo. He was 86. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean War. He also co-owned Dubois Cold Storage. Survivors include a son, Charles; and a daughter, Kimberly.

1948 – David A. Grammer Jr., Dec. 19, 2012, in Alamogordo, N.M., at age 86. A long-time Albuquerque lawyer, he enrolled in the Navy V-12 Program at CC during World War II and served as a supply officer and saw active duty in the Korean War. He practiced law for more than 40 years and served as president of the Albuquerque Bar Association and the Albuquerque Lawyers’ Club. Survivors include his wife, Betty; son David A. Grammer III; and daughters Margaret Gay, Mary Katherine, and Patricia Eskew.

1949 – Charles R. Neill Jr., Sept. 30, 2012, in Grand Junction, Colo. He was 90. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and received the American Service World War II Victory Medal. He received degrees in business and geology from CC, worked as a geologist and coal map editor, and was an accomplished bridge player. His wife, Fern, survives. He was predeceased by a brother, John Neill ’41.

1949 – Shirley Woolfenden Blakely, Sept. 30, 2012, in Cottonwood, Ariz. She met her future husband, Maurice Blakely ’44, at CC. The couple raised their family in Telluride, Colo., and Colorado Springs, where she was a homemaker. After her husband’s death in 1987, she relocated to Arizona. Survivors include daughters Mary Blakely, Julie Wysocki, and Linda Halverson; a nephew, Frank Blakely ’73; a sister, Joan Woolfenden ’46. She was predeceased by relatives Warren Blakely ’42 and Myrna Blakely ’51.

1949 – Henry C. Klingman of Naples, Fla., Jan. 21, of complications from a brain tumor. He received a degree in business from CC and helped found the Swiss-American Chamber of Commerce while working for the Port of New York in Zurich, Switzerland. He then created and ran a trading company. He was a member of the CC Legacy Society. He will be remembered for being a gregarious and soulful Renaissance man. Survivors include his wife, Maureen; and a son, Marcus Klingman ’85.

1950 – Alice Norton Matzen, Oct. 25, 2012. She is survived by a nephew, Charles Eastman Norton ’71; three children, Prudence, Annie, and Richard; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Her husband, Richard Matzen ’50, predeceased her.

1950 – Jeanette “Button” Elliott Lewis, Jan. 14, in Kirkland, Wash. She swallowed a button as a child and earned the nickname “Button.” She was a cheerleader at CC and met her future husband, Gary, a center on the football team there. A member of Kappa Alpha Theta, Jeanette graduated with a sociology degree and became a stewardess for American Airlines. She also sold antiques and raised Champion Borzoi show dogs. Survivors include her husband of 62 years, F. Gary Lewis ’51; and their five children, Chris, Izzie, Jennifer, Steve, and Carol.

1951 – Mary Jeanne LaMar Danis Deis, Sept 13, 2012, in Bloomington, Neb. She was 82. A former popular newspaper columnist, Jeanne co-founded the Colorado Springs Artists Association and created and authored the “Dear Maverick” column in The Gazette in Colorado Springs. In addition to being a journalist and artist, she appeared on hundreds of radio and television broadcasts across Colorado. She fought for equal rights for women, environmental responsibility, Native American land and water, and animal protection. Survivors include a daughter, Diana; sons Michael, Gregory, and Benjamin; and a stepson, Galen.

1952 – Donald Evan Cook, Oct. 17, 2012, in Denver, at age 84. While at CC, he met his future wife, Elsie Walden ’52, and moved to Greeley to practice pediatrics, including serving as team doctor to the Greeley Central High School football and wrestling teams. In 2000, he received a Benezet Award from the CC Alumni Association for his many accomplishments, including serving as president
of the National Academy of Pediatricians and his legacy to the children of Greeley through his founding of the Monfort Children’s Clinic for low-income and uninsured children. Survivors include his wife, Elsie; sons, Brian Donald Cook ’82, Christopher, and Jeff; and a daughter, Catherine Kilgore.

1952 – Donald Pinc of Eagle River, Wis., Jan. 3. He was 85. A Navy veteran of World War II, he worked for 33 years at First National Bank, retiring as executive vice president. Among survivors are his wife, Virginia; a daughter, Pamela Dwyer; and sons James and David.

1953 – John Francis Murphy of Grainola, Okla., Nov. 15, 2012. While at CC, he was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. A rancher by profession, he is survived by his wife, Linda; four children, and 11 grandchildren.

1953 – Judith Roddewig Bissell, May 17, 2012, in Glenview, Ill. At CC, she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. She practiced physical therapy, worked in school libraries, served as a voting precinct captain, and enjoyed garden and book clubs. Survivors include her husband, Cushman Bissell Jr.; and her children, Dianne, Brad, Jennifer, and Julie.

1953 – Wesley W. Boucher, Jan. 5, in Pueblo, Colo. After graduating from the University of Colorado School of Medicine in 1957, he joined the U.S. Navy and served as a physician in San Diego, Calif., Oakland, Calif., and Guam, before settling in Pueblo. He enjoyed golf and traveling. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Sally Ann Green ’55; their children Jon, Paul, Brett, Blake, and Michelle Gjerde; brothers Stanley Boucher ’49 and Gary Boucher ’63; and sisters-in-law Virginia Parker Boucher ’51 and Susan Boucher ’63. He was predeceased by a niece, Julie Boucher ’85.

1954 – Nicoll F. Galbraith, April 4, 2012, in Modesto, Calif. He was 79. He served in the military as a physician, as well as in his community. Three children, Davis, Robert, and Susan, survive.

1955 – Donald J. Crouse, Nov. 30, 2012, in Oro Valley, Ariz. He was 82. At CC, he was a member of the varsity hockey team and Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. He sponsored and coached many hockey teams in the Livingston County area. Survivors include his wife, Nancy; a son, Deron; and a daughter, Heather Reyes.

1956 – Luan Cutler McCarty Briefer, Dec. 9, 2012, in Golden, Colo., of Alzheimer’s disease. After the death of her first husband, she raised her children, worked part-time, and enjoyed tennis, skiing, golfing, and traveling. Survivors include her son, Michael; daughters Lynn McCarty and Beth Vermeulen; step-children Jessica Briefer-French and Andrew Briefer; a niece, Camille Bzdek Blakely ’84; and a nephew, Vince Bzdek ’82.

1960 – Jack Ensley Smith, Dec. 12, 2012, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He was 83. He played hockey for CC when the Tigers won the NCAA Division I championship in 1957. Jack is survived by his wife, Jeannie; son Brad; daughter Heather; and his grandchildren, Camryn and Brennen.

 

1963 – Beth Kendall O’Connor, Jan. 27 in Denver. She taught high school German and math. She is survived by her husband, Jim; a son Tom, and a granddaughter, Lauren.

1963 – Nelson “Skip” Sickul, Dec. 26, 2012, in Sun City, Ariz., at age 76. Attending CC on a football scholarship, he played for one year before a serious injury required him to return home to Stamford, Conn. He worked as a salesman and retired from Bally of Switzerland. Survivors include three children, Michelle, Debra, and Tracy Marie.

1965 – Judy Hendrick McBride, Jan. 1, from a cerebral hemorrhage at age 69. Judy worked with her husband, Dick, for 30 years in his orthodontic practice in Lawton, Okla. She became a medical record librarian following graduation from CC and practiced for a few years. She moved to San Marcos, Texas, in 2008, following retirement. Survivors include her husband, Richard; a son, Doug; a daughter, Jamie; and a sister, Helen.

1967 – Susan Hurst Ball of Laramie, Wyo., Nov. 24, 2012, after disappearing on a trek in Nepal. She was 67. Her former husband, Arthur Lane Dana ’63, survives, as does her husband Joseph Ball; two sons, Michael and Marcus; and two daughters, Sharon and Kari.

1969 – William Hunter Antonides, Jan. 8, at his home in Glenwood Springs, Colo. A third-generation Coloradan who spent most of his life on the Western Slope, he will be remembered for his smile and quick wit. Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Joey; a son, Ty; and a sister, Roxanne Lundberg Moore ’82. His parents, Francy and Carl Lundberg ’48, predeceased him.

1971 – Robert R. Jacobi, Jan. 16, in Grand Forks, N.D. He played varsity hockey at CC, served in the U.S. Army at Fort Carson, Colo., and farmed with his father in Minnesota. A hunter, golfer, and sports enthusiast, he also worked for the Grand Forks Park District. Survivors include his wife, Ellen Kelsey ’73; and three sons, Patrick, Jeffrey, and Charles.

1974 – Gary C. Dodge, Jan. 21, in Highlands Ranch, Colo. As a Boettcher Scholar, he graduated with honors from CC and was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He had a career in computer science, was a Boy Scout Master, volunteer firefighter, ski patrol member, and an avid motorsports racer, particularly of Porsches. Gary is survived by his wife, Luann; daughter Brigid; and son Ryan.

1978 – Lindsay McGee Tellefson, Dec. 29, 2012, in Santa Barbara, Calif. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of CC, she most recently was a director of philanthropy for Heifer International. She also was a founding member of The Remains Theatre Company in Chicago. She and her husband, Bob, who survives, enjoyed kayaking, deep sea diving, and beach walks. Other survivors include her parents, Winston and Susan McGee.

1980 – Eddy Mark Bailey, Jan. 29. He received a bachelor’s degree in geology from CC. His wife, Carole, survives.

1981 – Rodrigo Magallanes Jr., Sept. 7, 2012, in Santa Clara, Calif., of cancer. He was 53. After receiving a bachelor’s degree in physics from CC, he worked as an electrical engineer until the week before he died. He also loved concerts, tutoring music, and performing, recently with a jazz band. His wife, Rowena Reyes ’81; two children, Jessica and Kendrick; a brother, Saul Magallanes ’81; and a sister, Sarah Magallanes Vilchez ’86, survive.

1986 – Curtin “Curt” Winsor III, of Washington, D.C., Dec. 11, 2012 following a heart attack. He was 49. Known as a dynamic entrepreneur and philanthropist, he co-founded the Bank of Georgetown in 2005 and served as its chairman. He served on the boards of the National Zoo, the Washington National Opera, and Starlight Children’s Foundation. He also was an 1874 Society member for CC. Curt received a master’s degree in international relations from the University of Cambridge in England and was a trustee of the National Taxpayers Union, which seeks to reduce taxation. Survivors include his wife of 11 years, Deborah; and his three daughters, Devon, Elizabeth, and Julia. Other survivors are his parents, Ann and Curtin Winsor Jr.; a sister, Anita Winsor ’87; and a cousin, Debbie Donner ’83. He was predeceased by a cousin, Robert Donner Jr. ’54.

1993 – Mark Hummels, Feb. 1, following a shooting in Phoenix. He was 43. The president of the Phoenix chapter of the Federal Bar Association, Mark was a partner in the Osborn Maledon PA law firm and was representing a client in a mediation proceeding when he was shot. Mark grew up in Greeley, Colo., attended CC as a Boettcher Scholarship recipient and graduated Phi Beta Kappa with highest honors in 1993 in political science and Spanish. A litigation and appellate attorney, he graduated first in his class from Arizona Law in 2004. He was known for being talented, humble, multi-dimensional, funny, and gentle. Among survivors are his wife, Dana, and their two young children; his parents, Ken and Letha; and two brothers, David and Robert.
