Job Summary
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is a leader in the U.S. Department of Energy’s effort to secure an energy future that is both environmentally and economically sustainable. With locations in Golden, Boulder and Washington D.C., NREL is the primary laboratory for research, development and deployment of renewable energy technologies in the United States. The NREL mission is to develop renewable energy and energy efficient technologies and practices, advance related science and engineering, and transfer knowledge and innovation to address the nation’s energy and environmental goals.

We have an immediate opening for a year-round student internship in our Golden, Colorado office. The position would be part- to full time (20-40 hours per week) through the end of the internship. To be eligible, candidates must be in a graduate program or have graduated within 2 months of applying.  Candidates will only be eligible to work as graduate interns for up to one year after their graduation date.

The successful candidate will have strong research and communication skills (writing, speaking and listening). Experience or coursework in clean energy related topics which may include distributed generation; international, federal, state, or local energy policy; energy sector resilience; international energy transitions; and/or climate related energy projects. The candidate will support various NREL efforts and projects at NREL that include domestic technical assistance programs to tribes, cities and states in clean energy; international programs focused on clean energy transitions; power sector modeling and analysis; and projects focused on resilient energy systems.

Job Duties:
Duties may include: supporting full-time technical staff in conducting analysis for clean energy deployment, researching energy development projects and initiatives in developing countries, writing technical reports, assisting in the organization of conferences and events, among others. This work could also entail background research in support of technical assistance programs and supporting proposal development and new project implementation. This job may also include website support, such as content management.

Required Education, Experience, and Skills
Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a degree granting program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution. Internship period cannot exceed 12 months past graduation. Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average. Please Note: You will need to upload unofficial transcripts and a letter of recommendation as part of the application process.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree student in public policy, environmental studies, energy studies, international policy, economics, urban planning, MBA or equivalent.
  • Exceptional writing skills
  • Proven organization skills,
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Excel,
  • Excels at working within a team environment are highly valued in this position.
  • Experience with working with governments and/or private sector on energy related issues is a plus
  • Foreign language skills are a plus.
  • Power sector planning and operational practices, including energy modeling or market analysis skills are a plus.
  • Familiarity with renewable energy project finance and climate finance facilities and funding options are a plus
