And we are off!

Hola amigos,

Monday September 2nd marks the first day of school for all Colorado College students- new and old. SOMOS is excited for the arrival of friends, and the start of planning for Hispanic Heritage Month Sept. 15th- Oct. 15th. We have some great events plan from lectures to movie screenings that will show our campus the diversity of what it means to be Latino.

We would also like to announce that Eleanor will be starting her adventures at a new school, passing the torch of co-chair leadership to Aurora Bamba, senior and dedicated SOMOS member of three years. Both her and Amairani are already working hard in planning this upcoming semester. Below is a passage Amairani wrote in our Facebook group!

Our co-chairs are also working on designing this year’s SOMOS tees that will be available the second SOMOS meeting of the year during Block 2! :)

“Hello awesome people!!!! I hope you enjoyed your summer and are now ready to get settled in at CC and have a great year! Just wanted to update you guys on a few things. First of all, Aurora B. Terrazas and I will be the co-chairs for this year and we have some pretty cool things planned out. We are working on Hispanic Heritage Month during Block 1 & 2. We also want to have more of a “family” within SOMOS so be on the lookout for cool group events. Also, if you guys have any ideas on how we can further assist students at Mitchell HS, that would be great!
See you guys soon!!!!” -Amairani

Let’s try this again

Hola amigos,

SOMOS was a great success this past year! We had amazing leaders- Linda Jimenez, Gianina Horton, and Joel Begay- who strengthened the club, and we also had committed members who, through mucho sol, rain, and snow, came to meetings every Wednesday at 5pm in the Butler Center. I am tellin’ ya’ll, that is why we won the Club of the Year award 2012-2013 from OMIS (Office for Minority and International Students).

This up-coming year we will work towards establishing a better online presence. As one can see, this is only two (or is it three?) post in the last year. Ay ay ay! We must do better for the 2013-2014 school year! Check out the photo below of us this past year too!

Here is a note from ex-SOMOS leader Gianina Horton:

“Wow! That is literally the one word that comes close to words about my thoughts on SOMOS. At the end of my sophomore year I was hesitant about excepting a leadership position in a club that 1) currently only had three members, and 2) I wasn’t really passionate about. Looking back I am so grateful for Andi Ruybal, another ex-SOMOS leader alum 2012, who knew the club was in good hands with Linda, Joel, and I. SOMOS became my everything this past year. When Roger Smith (Director of OMIS) announced SOMOS’s name at the OMIS Formal for the Club of the Year Award I looked at Alejandro, another SOMOS member, in shock. I am sure his shocked face mirrored my own! I think it was well deserved and I am honored to know that my fellow OMIS peers saw the growth SOMOS underwent this past school year, and I have no doubt that they will continue to see SOMOS grow under the leadership of Amairani Alamillo and Aurora Bamba. What else can I say? Yo <3 SOMOS."

With that amigos, look forward to the next post! Maybe you will see a design for the new SOMOS T-shirts!

Who you callin' serious?! :P

Adios
