El Pomar Sports Center

Big milestone ahead for new fitness center

By the time Colorado College students return from winter break on Jan. 7, progress on the new Adam F. Press Fitness Center will have taken another significant step toward fruition.

The northern addition to the El Pomar Sports Center is scheduled to be fully enclosed in glass and metal by New Year’s Day, as the three-phase, $27 million renovations and new construction project nears completion. A dedication ceremony is planned for late spring 2013, after a good year and a half of work that began in October 2011.

“It’s real exciting to reach the point of full enclosure,” said athletics director Ken Ralph. “That’s the next big milestone.”

The fitness center will serve faculty, staff and students in the CC community.

Plenty of other notable events have occurred over the past few months at the center.

Most exciting was seeing 897 fans crowd into the renovated Reid Arena on Nov. 3 to watch the Tigers volleyball team win the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference postseason championship and earn an automatic NCAA Division III Tournament berth, Ralph said.

Other noteworthy events over the past couple months, starting with the most recent, include:

  • Opening of the new press box along the west sideline of renovated Washburn Field, where new turf was installed in mid-October.
  • Most of the renovations to existing center completed in early September with varsity teams moving into locker rooms on Sept. 20.
  • Gateway addition along Cache La Poudre Street opened on Aug. 6. Athletic department staff and coaches moved into 24 offices and four meeting rooms.
