Cross-Currents at the IDEA Space

Recently, I attended the opening of Cross Currents: Tradition and Innovation in Contemporary Art of the Islamic World, which is currently showing in the IDEA Space and the Coburn Gallery at Colorado College.  The works of the seven artists featured – all natives of the Islamic world – employ a range of media and are both challenging and beautiful. They were chosen by Curator Jessica Hunter-Larsen for adapting “aesthetic strategies and themes from older Persian and Arabic traditions to address contemporary issues.”  The exhibit catalogue profiles the artists and also includes interesting commentary from three CC professors – Ruth Kolarik (Art and Art History), Peter Wright (Religion), and Jane Murphy (History).

I highly recommend Cross Currents, which is showing on campus until October 24, 2012. This exhibit is part of a series of Cross Current events planned for the 2012-2013 academic year. The series was kicked off with a lecture at New Student Orientation by Robin Wright, journalist, foreign policy analyst and author of “Rock the Casbah: Rage and Rebellion Across the Islamic World.” Wright’s book was the assigned summer reading for new students.
