Making the case for the liberal arts
Check out this article on the Council of Independent College’s new effort to message the value of a liberal education. The article includes many good points. Notably, elite liberal arts colleges are doing well. For example, we had a record admissions year at CC last year (and early applications are up over 10% again this year). However, small institutions with little endowment earnings and more regional reputations are struggling with enrollment.
Another interesting discussion is about how to best message the value of the liberal arts. Should we focus on outcomes in terms of jobs? Or is it better to talk about the impact of a liberal education on how one lives one’s life? Why not both? After all, the two are often linked. A life that includes challenging and meaningful work is likely to be a fulfilling one.
