Celebrating Ellis Ulysses Butler, Jr. ’40
June 10th marked the 100th birthday of the late Ellis Ulysses Butler, Jr. ’40. Butler attended Colorado Springs High School (now Palmer High School) and came to CC in 1936. He passed away in 2009.
At CC, Butler ran track and won the Van Deist award, graduating magna cum laude in physics in 1940. Butler was a long-time annual donor to Colorado College and left a generous final donation to the college in his will, with which CC established the Ellis U. Butler Center in his honor. In 2014, CC expanded the Butler Center in Worner Campus Center.
While Butler and his wife Ora did not have any children of their own, the couple served as mentors and caretakers for many, including their great-niece Cherokee Benavidez. Benavidez remembers how her great uncle taught her to “stand up for yourself and don’t let anyone disrespect you, no matter what your color or situation.”
Thank you to the Butler Center staff for hosting a birthday celebration for Mr. Butler, and thank you to those who joined us to honor his legacy. Read more about Mr. Butler here.
