While I could have played some of B\u00e9la&#8217;s selections from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Ah7nX8sRmmo&amp;list=PL-rWErjKzbFB6vthg40N11baYX1n7__WF\">Rocket Power<\/a> (the best Flecktones album, in my opinion), or from his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=AXjcTL_-VR8\">recent duo album with Chick Corea<\/a> which absolutely blew my mind when I heard it, or something\u00a0of Abigail&#8217;s insanely creative <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5rDrPBzJo5o\">&#8220;City of Refuge&#8221;<\/a>, I decided to go with a new and seemingly humorous piece the married duo performed almost a year ago.<\/p>\n<p>When I talk about their performance of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=9jK-NcRmVcw\">Europe&#8217;s &#8220;The Final Countdown&#8221;<\/a> as humorous, I am really only extending the degree of levity to the superficial: the wigs, The A.V. Club&#8217;s tradition of comedy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=xMRA0r92iac\">my obsession with GOB from arrested development<\/a>. All other aspects of this performance, though, are met with the gravest intent, as if the duo\u00a0are performing a sacred Appalachian folk song from deep within their repertoire. From her first chord, Abigail sets the tone of the performance as different and beautiful. Her accompaniment to B\u00e9la&#8217;s tender rendition of the melody and chorus\u00a0make turn the performance on its head. Where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=baExq6xNhQ8\">others like to keep in the A.V. Club&#8217;s tradition of satirizing popular music<\/a>\u00a0(of course, not that this is a bad thing!), the duo quietly and methodically go about fulfilling their endless\u00a0creative impulses and leave us, the listener, with a piece of astoundingly spiritual beauty.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; I was trying to think of a B\u00e9la Fleck\/Abigail Washburn song to post, since this incredible duo will be playing at CC in a matter of hours.
