Contesting Medicine, Managing Risk, and Preserving Childhoods in the Age of Medical Uncertainty

Vanessa Lopes Muñoz
Assistant Professor of Sociology-

Scholars note that medicine is increasingly focused on managing risk or preventing future ill health rather than treating existing symptoms and disease. Muñoz uses the case of childhood food allergies, a condition that is primarily about managing exposure to common foods, to examine people’s experiences with managing health risks in daily life. She draws from interviews with parents of children with food allergies and their medical providers as well as clinic and school observations to examine how caregivers balance medical uncertainty, social disruption, and risk in daily life.
