New Tools for Improving Access to Community Water Quality: Development of Economic Sensors and the Fountain Valley Water Project

How do you know when your water is safe to drink? A quarter of the world’s population is without access to sanitary water, in large part due to a lack of cheap and accessible testing technologies. This talk will highlight our efforts to design and build the world’s first simple, cheap, and truly open-source sensors for measuring heavy metals like lead in water. In our own backyard, a community of 70,000 people have been exposed to harmful levels of toxic firefighting foam in their drinking water. I will finish by describing the Fountain Valley Water Project (501c3), a large-scale citizen science initiative aimed at monitoring the spread of contamination and educating the community about its scientific, health, and legal ramifications.
