Ethnography is a way of seeing the world used in anthropology; visual ethnography takes the visual as both technique of representation and mode of knowing. During this block, we will map the growing field of visual anthropology, focusing on theoretical and practical aspects related to photography in social research. Students will analyze ethnographic images to gain competence in the aesthetic and technical dimensions of image production while developing a critical lens. Students will develop their own visual projects as we explore the theoretical underpinning of visual ethnography. In this process, we will discuss critical issues in anthropology related to ethnographic evidence, knowledge production, reflexivity, ethics and aesthetics in the process of cultural presentation.
