An open house celebrating the new Cheryl Schlessman Bennett Children\u2019s Center was held Friday, Sept. 28, with three generations of family members in attendance. Colorado College\u2019s new children\u2019s center is named in memory of Cheryl Schlessman Bennett \u201977, an education major who was passionate about children\u2019s welfare and taught elementary school in Colorado.<\/p>\n

Construction of the new $2 million children\u2019s center was made possible by a gift from the Schlessman family. Schlessman family and friends in attendance at the event were Lee Schlessman \u201950 (Cheryl\u2019s father), Susan Schlessman Duncan \u201952 and Jim Duncan (Cheryl\u2019s aunt and uncle), Bill Bennett (Cheryl\u2019s husband), Eric Bennett (Cheryl\u2019s son), Sandy Garnett \u201975 (Cheryl\u2019s sister), Mick Fredericks \u201976 (Cheryl\u2019s cousin), Deb Angell \u201974 (Cheryl\u2019s cousin), and Peggy Christie \u201977 (Cheryl\u2019s college roommate) and Alex Christie.<\/p>\n

The new 9,000-plus square-foot center will accommodate\u00a064 children, from infants to preschoolers, nearly doubling the number that the former children\u2019s center could hold.<\/p>\n

Beth Dovenspike, director of Cheryl\u2019s Center, and Sandra Wong, dean of the college and dean of the faculty, both spoke at the open house. \u201cAt Colorado College, we often talk about enabling our students to become life-long learners. As we think about our own childhoods, many of us realize how much our earliest social and learning experiences mattered,\u201d Wong said.<\/p>\n

She added that the center, which provides child care for Colorado College\u2019s faculty and staff, offers an opportunity for learning to begin in a rich and healthy environment. \u201cThe center creates the kind of community we value. It attracts faculty and staff to CC, and builds connections as children grow up together and share friendships,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
