{"id":3842,"date":"2018-10-04T15:25:34","date_gmt":"2018-10-04T15:25:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.coloradocollege.edu\/atb\/?p=3842"},"modified":"2018-10-04T15:25:34","modified_gmt":"2018-10-04T15:25:34","slug":"day-of-service-morphs-into-week-of-action","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.coloradocollege.edu\/atb\/2018\/10\/04\/day-of-service-morphs-into-week-of-action\/","title":{"rendered":"Day of Service Morphs Into Week of Action"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Normal1\"><b><span lang=\"EN\">By Miriam Brown \u201921<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal1\"><span lang=\"EN\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN\">What do creek clean<\/span><span lang=\"EN\">-ups, blood drives, and anti-racism workshops have in common?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal1\"><span lang=\"EN\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN\">They are all ways for Colorado College students, faculty, and staff to engage with the local community during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coloradocollege.edu\/offices\/cce\/week-of-action.html\">CC\u2019s recent Week of Action<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal1\"><span lang=\"EN\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN\">Historically, the events focused on cleaning up local creeks during CC\u2019s annual Day of Service. The annual Creek Week Clean-Up is a community-wide effort of the Pikes Peak region to clean creek and watershed fronts across the area. In the past, C<\/span><span lang=\"EN\">Cstudents and members of the campus community have done their part by trekking to Monument Creek to pick up trash along the bank. Duringthe 2016 event, theypicked up 3,140 pounds of trash intwo miles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal1\"><span lang=\"EN\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN\">This year, Niki Sosa, community partnership development coordinator for the Collaborative for Community Engagement, wanted to provide more\u00a0opportunities to join in on the fun. Because of the fast-paced nature of the Block Plan, the CCE settled on a full week of action.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal1\"><span lang=\"EN\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe thought with the week, we would have multiple afternoons where we could have diverse opportunities and showcase different ways that our CC community can be engaging in the greater Colorado Springs community,\u201d Sosa says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal1\"><span lang=\"EN\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN\">The Week of Action, which took place from Sept. 29, to Oct. 6, featured nine intercampus groups and 11 community partners.<\/span><span lang=\"EN\">On Monday, 18community organizations set up tables in Worner Campus Center for an engagement fair to show students the myriad ways they could participate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal1\"><span lang=\"EN\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cBig change happens on the local level, and we are helping to create pathways so that students can get connected to that,\u201d says Sosa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal1\"><span lang=\"EN\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN\">The week included events like an anti-racist agenda workshop, a discussion with <\/span><span lang=\"EN\">city council members Jill Gaebler and Don Knight, a Bonfil Blood Drive, and a day exploring Colorado Springs with Leadership Pikes Peak. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal1\"><span lang=\"EN\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cIt\u2019s just hopefully the beginning,\u201d says Anthony Siracusa, the CCE\u2019s engaged learning specialist.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Miriam Brown \u201921 \u00a0What do creek clean-ups, blood drives, and anti-racism workshops have in common? \u00a0They are all ways for Colorado College students, faculty, and staff to engage with the local community during CC\u2019s recent Week of Action. \u00a0Historically, the events focused on cleaning up local creeks during CC\u2019s annual Day of Service.
