Check Out Class of 2014 Assignments"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What are college students reading this summer?\u00a0 In preparation for New Student Orientation, CC\u2019s\u00a0 Class of 2014 is reading \u201cMountains Beyond Mountains: The Quest of Dr. Paul Farmer, A Man Who Would Cure the World<em> <\/em>\u201d by Tracy Kidder.<\/p>\n<p>Popular themes at other colleges \u00a0include the Middle East,\u00a0climate change,\u00a0social justice, race in America, world politics, and the classics. Here&#8217;s a peek at what other colleges have assigned their incoming freshmen. Who knows, you\u00a0might want to\u00a0add one or two to your own summer reading list.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The College of Wooster: \u201cChildren of Dust\u201d by Ali Eteraz. This memoir is about his coming of age in Islam as a resident of rural Pakistan, the American Bible Belt, and the modern Middle East.<\/li>\n<li>Saint Michael&#8217;s College: \u201cField Notes from a Catastrophe\u201d by Elizabeth Kolbert. The subtitle of this 2006 book tells more about its focus: \u201cMan, Nature, and Climate Change.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>University of Dayton: \u201cWhen the Emperor was Divine\u201d<em> <\/em>by Julie Otsuka. The book details the lives of Japanese-American family members who were interned during World War II.<\/li>\n<li>Lehigh University: \u201cThree Cups of Tea\u201d by Greg Mortenson. The book details how the author came to build schools for children in Pakistan and Afghanistan.<\/li>\n<li>University of Maryland, Baltimore County: \u201cThe Translator\u201d by Daoud Hari. The memoir reads like a novel and speaks about the horrors of the conflict in Darfur.<\/li>\n<li>Bentley University: \u201cA Hope in the Unseen\u201d by Ron Suskind.
