Abigail Washburn, a noted folk singer, helped create multimedia Web content to raise awareness and money for the Sichuan, China, earthquake relief effort. On May 12, 2008, an earthquake shook Sichuan, leaving more than 88,000 people dead, hundreds of thousands missing and more than five million people homeless. Abigail was in Nashville when the earthquake hit, but in November 2008, she was teaching traditional American music at Sichuan University. “During my time there, I hung out with an old friend, Peter Goff, who leads the Sichuan Quake Relief organization,” she says. Peter took Abigail with him to six relocation schools to play music for the students while volunteers set up new libraries. “After I would perform for the kids, they wanted to share their songs and stories of loss and longing,” Abigail says. The resulting project includes a 10minute documentary and photo galleries and tells the story of making the music. For more about the project, go to www.afterquakemusic.com
