Lowell Vernon Coulter, May 2, 2009, in Westwood, Mass. He received his master’s degree from Colorado College and his doctorate from the University of California­Berkeley, and spent a year in Dayton, Ohio, where he led the section of the Manhattan Project that developed the atomic bomb’s detonation trigger. Lowell was a professor emeritus of chemistry at Boston University. He is survived by his children, Andrea and Michael, four grandchildren, and two great­grandchildren.

Floyd Earl Bucklin, July 17, 2009, in LaGrange, Ga. He is survived by his wife, Bettijo Evans ’42, their children, Molly, John, and Floyd, and one grandchild.

George William Teller, June 5, 2009. He worked as a medical doctor. He is survived by his wife, Eleanor; their children, Suzette, Kevin, John, Bernadette, and Robert; 12 grandchildren; and three great­grandchildren. George was preceded in death by a daughter, Georgianne.

1942

Thomas Loren Pelican, June 20, 2009, in Colorado Springs, Colo. After graduating from Colorado College, he received his master’s degree in science from the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago. He joined Colorado Interstate Gas Company in 1948 as a natural gas engineer, and worked his way up in the company to become a senior corporate executive. He was CIG president when he retired in 1977. After retiring from CIG, he began a second career as a rancher on 119 acres east of Durango. In 2003, he and his wife, Betty Jane, moved back to Colorado Springs to be closer to family. He was inducted into the Colorado College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005 for his achievements in football and basketball. He is survived by his wife; their children, Steven, Suzanne, and Gail; three granddaughters; and two nieces.

1945

Marjorie Landsberg Helkenn, April 24, 2009, Des Moines, Iowa. She was born in Des Moines and headed west to Colorado College, where she was active in campus activities. Marjorie returned to Iowa, where she worked at Bankers Life (now Principal Financial). She loved being part of the political process, and worked at the Iowa Senate for more than 14 years. She is survived by her two daughters, Kay and Beth, and three grandchildren.

Helen Monro Ward, March 13, 2009. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Ward. She is survived by her children, James, John, Andrew, Margaret, Suzanne, and Mary Celeste.

Richard Bowen Stark, July 16, 2009, in Albuquerque, N.M. He studied and performed music throughout his life and particularly loved the piano. He received his master’s degree in music from Yale University. In his last years, he was preparing to publish a book on the finger exercises Johann Sebastian Bach wrote for his own children. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lou, and is survived by his children, Gregor, Jeffery, and Rich; a sister; two grandsons; and nieces and nephews.

John Thomas Haggin, March 5, 2009, in Greeley, Colo. He worked in the oil and gas industry. He is survived by his wife, Janet H. Simpson Haggin ’50; a son, Michael; one granddaughter; and nieces and nephews.

1947

James R. Creighton, April 12, 2008, in Galesburg, Ill. He arrived at Colorado College in the fall of 1942 and was in the V12 Navy program. Given the grade of ensign in 1943, he served in the South Pacific in World War II, and returned to graduate with the Class of ’47. He was accepted in the overseas defense department school system and was a teacher and counselor in Germany and Iceland until retiring in 1990. He was an avid environmentalist, bicyclist, and tennis player, participating in several Senior Olympics in Wisconsin, Iowa, and Illinois. He is survived by a brother, Pete ’49, and a sister, Rosemary.

Frederic Ramsell Morath, June 5, 2009, in Natick, Mass. He was born in Colorado Springs, on Dec. 21, 1923, to Frederic Palmer Morath, founder of the AdAmAn Club, and Gladys Ramsell Morath, a longtime society editor at the Colorado Springs Gazette. He worked in direct­mail advertising, first for Walter Drake & Sons in Colorado Springs and then for Breck’s of Boston, the H.E. Harris Co., and Dickenson Direct Marketing. Before leaving Colorado Springs, he taught history as a lecturer at Colorado College. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; four children; 10 grandchildren; and his brother, Max ’48.

Phyllis Easterling Patterson, July 31, 2009, in Colorado Springs. A resident of Colorado Springs since 1944, she was preceded in death by her mother, father, and her beloved Ira, who died shortly before they were to be married. She was the executive secretary of the Union Printers Home Association and volunteered in CC’s Annual Fund office for more than seven years.

Fred James Robinson, June 15, 2009, in Fort Myers, Fla. Fred was a retired civil engineer and a native of Colorado Springs. He is survived by his wife, Laura; his children, Terry, John and David; two grandsons; and a sister, Patricia Kirby. He was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. A celebration of Fred’s life is recorded on YouTube as “Knowing Fred The Way We Do.”

Jane Pollock Ohl, Aug. 16, 2009. She was a geologist for the U.S. Geological Survey in Washington, D.C., from 1951 to 1953. She rejoined the survey in Denver in 1961 and worked there until 1980. She worked for the U.S. Bureau of Mines until 1990 and from 1991–93 she was with the Minerals Information Institute. She is survived by her husband, Michael ’51.

James H.O. Peterson, July 6, 2009, in Edmond, Okla. He served for 25 years and retired as regional vice president with the Ralston Purina Co. He was appointed to state purchasing director, business development director for the U.S. Department of Commerce, and over the years worked with the governor’s office on special projects. He was national accounts manager for Macklanburg Duncan before forming his consulting business in 1984. He was a devoted alumnus of Colorado College. He and Helen hosted many alumni events, co­chaired the Oklahoma campaign of the 1980s, and spearheaded the Class of 1951 Endowment. He is survived by his wife, Helen Barthell Peterson ’51; son, Mark; daughter, Sarah; four grandchildren; and six great­grandchildren. His granddaughter Erica Fukuhara graduated in 1999.

Joan Kirkpatrick, Aug. 4. 2009, in Oklahoma City, Okla. She attended Colorado College and joined Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority. She is known for her work with the Kirkpatrick Foundation, which her parents began in 1955. She worked in the art department of then­KMPT­TV in Oklahoma City and later earned her real estate license. She volunteered for many organizations throughout her life. She is survived by her son, Christian, and a grandson.

She was an active member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and Tuesday Morning Class, and a 24­year volunteer for the Children’s Hospital Auxiliary consignment shop, La Cache. Her grandfather, William Iliff, co­founded the Iliff School of Theology at the University of Denver. She is survived by a daughter, Sue; her sister, Suzy; and aunt, Alberta.

Janis R. Rosenthal van Zante, July 18, 2009, Orange, Calif. She taught English to speakers of other languages at the Intensive English Center at the University of Colorado, in Italy as a Fulbright lecturer, and in the Slovak Republic as a foreign language fellow for the U.S. Information Agency. Janis wrote English­language teaching materials and was lead author of “Grammar Links 3: A Theme­Based Course for Reference and Practice.” Janis is survived by her husband, Peter ’68; their children, Annemieke and Schuyler; and two grandchildren.

Tom Newman, March 23, 2009, in Falls Church, Va. He was the driving force behind the construction of an ice rink that is the practice facility for the Washington Capitals hockey team. Tom was an Arlington County, Va., economic development official. He is survived by his wife, Amy Moll; their sons, Thomas and William; his father; and two brothers.

Robert Ingalls Chase, Aug. 22, 2009, in Portland, Maine. He worked for Maine National Bank, and most recently for R.M. Davis, Inc., as an investment advisor. 1981

Mary Anne Vaughan Kobylka, July 7, 2009, in Kirkland, Ore. Mary Anne was featured in a July 7, 2009, article in the Kirkland, Ore., Reporter newspaper: “She hopes to reach her 50th birthday this September. And what could be her final legacy, she also hopes to raise $50,000 for ovarian cancer research this month.” The article ran the day Mary Anne died, and it told of her fight with late­stage ovarian cancer and her fundraising efforts. She had been diagnosed with cancer in 2004, and six months later, she learned of the Swedish Summer Run, an annual triathlon event that has raised more than $3 million for the Marsha Rivkin Center for Ovarian Cancer Research. She began training for the next triathlon and signed up for that next event. Since that time, she competed in the event every year. Last year, “Team Mary Anne” was the top fundraising team, with $47,433 donated to support ovarian cancer research. She is survived by her husband, Richard, and their sons, David and Alex.

Christopher Quon, September 19, 2009. Chris died unexpectedly at a Chicago area hospital from a heart condition. Chris was a member of the Colorado College men’s soccer team and the men’s lacrosse team, and majored in economics. The Colorado College soccer team has dedicated the remainder of the season to his memory.

Jerrel W. “Jerry” Lear, July 26, 2009, in Colorado Springs, Colo. He grew up in La Junta, Colo., and helped La Junta High School claim state championships in three different sports — basketball, football and track — in a single academic year, 1949–50. He graduated from Denver University in 1954, was a member of the U.S. Marine Corps and was honorably discharged in 1956. He started his teaching career in Paonia, Colo., transferred to Palmer High School in Colorado Springs, and then was hired at Colorado College as head swimming and assistant football coach. The “Big Cat” retired after 33 years. He is survived by his wife, Roberta, and daughters Linda and Lesa ’86. He is also survived by seven grandchildren; three great­grandchildren; and his younger brother, Wandel.

Robert D. McJimsey, Sept. 3, 2009, in Colorado Springs. A professor emeritus of history at Colorado College, Bob’s fields of specialization were British history and early modern Europe. He joined CC’s history department in 1968. He earned his B.A. from Grinnell College in 1958, an M.A. from the University of Wisconsin in 1961, and a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in 1968.
