He plans to take on the Arizona Trail next.<\/p>\n Last summer, Jim Hopkins <\/strong>and his wife Jann hosted classmates Peter Hershberger, Ray Kawano <\/strong>and Cathy Pottle Kawano, <\/strong>as well as Peter\u2019s brother Chris, in Omaha, Nebraska, for the opening games of the 2015 NCAA Men\u2019s College World Series (above). It marked the first time Peter, Ray, and Cathy had been in Omaha together since Jim and Jann\u2019s 1972 wed- ding. Based on Nathaniel Hawthorne\u2019s 1850 work, it finds David collaborating with composer Lori Laitman. The duo also continues to work on developing \u201cLudlow,\u201d an opera to be based on David\u2019s verse novel about the 1914 mining tragedy<\/p>\n For the 13th time since graduating from CC \u2014 and for the first time ever outside the United States \u2014 six Class of \u201979 friends recently assembled in Costa Rica for a reunion. The multimedia experience featuring traditional Chinese instruments took place at the Kennedy Center Opera House in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n Linda Benfield <\/strong>has been named a 2016 BTI Client Service All-Star by the BTI Consulting Group. Linda specializes in environmental law.<\/p>\n Janet Friedman-Pizzo <\/strong>is a competitive speech and debate coach at Butte Falls High School in Butte Falls, Oregon. In 2015, she received two professional certifications from the National Speech and Debate Association: Professional Speech and Debate Coach Accreditation and Advanced Professional Speech and Debate Coach Accreditation. In 2016, she received the NSDA\u2019s Distinguished Service Plaque \u2014 First Honors, an honor received by only 153 coaches since 1925.<\/p>\n Steve Zahorik <\/strong>of Castle Pines, Colorado, has received Five Star Wealth Manager awards for 2014 and 2015. Nominations come from peers or firms, and awards are based on objective criteria including client retention rates, client assets administered, firm review, and favorable regulatory history. Steve is a financial adviser with Wells Fargo Advisors.<\/p>\n Laura Ann Hershey <\/strong>earned posthumous election to the Colorado Women\u2019s Hall of Fame. Laura was honored for her work both in the Denver area and nationwide as a writer, activist, and advocate for the disabled community.<\/p>\n Via a partnership with New York public television station WNET, Holly Carter <\/strong>helped teenagers bring five 30-minute documentaries to air earlier this year. Holly (also a former CC trustee) is founder and executive director of BYkids, a nonprofit organization that has paired young storytellers with \u201cfilm mentors\u201d such as the late Albert Maysles and Neal Baer \u201978.<\/strong><\/p>\n Ed Casias <\/strong>received The David Olbright Outstanding Youth Mentor Award from The Summit Foundation in Breckenridge, Colorado. Ed was recognized for his involvement with Mountain Mentors, Summit County Head Start, and Summit Lake Dillon Optimist Club, and for his contributions in coaching youth sports.<\/p>\n Todd<\/strong> Prusin <\/strong>(above, far right) recently took his family to visit friends Chip Sagal \u201989 <\/strong>and Courtney Cutter \u201989 <\/strong>in San Diego. Her career focus has been on leading change for a healthier Colorado.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Before joining the Department of Health Care Policy and Financing in January 2015, Gretchen was the executive director of the nonprofit Colorado Coalition for the Medically Underserved for six years. Over the years, she also has served as chair and member of the Board of Directors for Connect for Health Colorado, on the Board of Directors for the Colorado Children\u2019s Health Care Access Program and the Anchor Center for Blind Children, and on the Board of Trustees for HealthONE.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n In her early career, Gretchen was a private consultant focused on leadership development, complex systems change initiatives, strategic planning, program management, and constituent engagement for numerous public-serving organizations. She received a master\u2019s in public health from the University of Washington.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The Livesay Award was created by the Public Interest Fellowship Program several years ago to honor \u201ca Colorado College alum who is living out the mission, spirit, and goals of PIFP in his or her life and career by contributing to systemic change, by increasing the capacity of the nonprofit sector, and by helping to build a new generation of nonprofit leaders.\u201d The award will be formally presented to Gretchen at the annual PIFP dinner in May.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n On Dec. 1, Laila Peabody Scott <\/strong>was interviewed as part of MSNBC\u2019s coverage of Giving Tuesday. He is an assistant professor at Salisbury University, where he also directs the Institute for Public Affairs and Civic Engagement and co-directs the Maryland Holocaust Educators Network.<\/p>\n Elissa Greene <\/strong>(below) has assumed the role of executive director of Strings Music Festival in Steamboat Springs, Colorado.<\/p>\n Whitney Johnson <\/strong>has attracted media attention of late for the work of Generation Ubuntu, the nonprofit organization she founded in 2006. <\/a>Marshall Griffith <\/strong>has donated a lithograph etching of President Theodore Roosevelt by Frances Soule Campbell to the college. Marshall says the etching belonged to his grandfather and 1901 CC graduate Benjamin Griffith<\/strong>, and was likely a gift from Roosevelt for his grandfather\u2019s willingness to run on the Progressive ticket for U.S. Senate in 1912. <\/a>Dolores Atencio <\/strong>has received three prestigious honors in the legal field. The government of Mexico recognized Dolores with its Ohtli Award, given to Mexican, Mexican-American, or Latino leaders who have boosted the well-being, prosperity, and empowerment of Mexican communities abroad. In addition, the Colorado Hispanic Bar Association presented Dolores with its Lifetime Achievement Award.
