CC will honor eight distinguished former students by bestowing their names on residential buildings in the new East Campus housing community during CC\u2019s Family and Friends Weekend, Oct. 6-8. The individuals honored represent a broad array of fields, including academic, art, government, military, and mountaineering.<\/p>\n
\u201cNaming the buildings of this new student housing community for distinguished former students highlights the college\u2019s rich history and connects today\u2019s students to the generations of accomplished alumni who have lived and studied on the Colorado College campus,\u201d says President Jill Tiefenthaler.<\/p>\n
The honorees:<\/p>\n
\u2022 Marcellus H. Chiles<\/b>, Colorado College\u2019s only Medal of Honor recipient, was a student at CC when World War I began.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Marian Williams Clarke<\/b>, the first CC graduate, and, among the first 20 women nationally, to be elected to federal office, graduated in 1902.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Albert R. Ellingwood<\/b>, the college\u2019s first Rhodes Scholar and an accomplished mountaineer, graduated in 1910.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Peggy Gail Fleming<\/b>, who dominated women\u2019s figure skating from 1966 to 1968, attended Colorado College in the late 1960s.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Glenna Maxey Goodacre<\/b>, best known for designing the obverse of the Sacagawea dollar and the Vietnam Women\u2019s Memorial in Washington, D.C., graduated in 1961.<\/p>\n
\n\u2022 James Joseph Heckman<\/b>, CC\u2019s only Nobel laureate, noted for his contributions to labor economics and the microeconomics of diversity and heterogeneity, graduated in 1965.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Frederick M. Roberts<\/b>, the college\u2019s first African American graduate and the first African American elected to the California State Legislature, graduated in 1906.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Ken Salazar<\/b>, CC\u2019s first U.S. senator and first presidential cabinet member, served as the nation\u2019s secretary of the interior from 2009 to 2013. He graduated in 1977.<\/p>\n
East Campus housing, which will house 154 students<\/span> in eight residential buildings, is scheduled for completion this summer. The new campus housing development, located on the southeast corner of Nevada Avenue and Uintah Street, includes a combination of cottages, small houses, and apartments that will face an outdoor common area, helping to promote a sense of neighborhood and community.
