I hasten to add, however, that I spent my sabbaticals exploring alternative careers. More music, art, and hiking. With great gratitude for 56 years of teaching and scholarship at Colorado College and elsewhere. When Vincent Carroll, former director of the editorial page at <i>The Denver Post<\/i> retired last year, he said \u201cTom and Bob (Loevy) are walking encyclopedias of knowledge concerning state and presidential politics,as well as a pleasure to work with for journalists. They provide very readable copy \u2014 no dense academese \u2014 that includes rich insights and context that gets below the surface of events. We\u2019re near completion of our second book, this one titled \u201cMarlowe\u2019s Cat: Raymond Chandler\u2019s \u2018The Long Goodbye\u2019 From Novel to Screenplay to Robert Altman\u2019s Film.\u201d Merrill and I are simultaneously working on a much shorter book on Chandler\u2019s first and best novel, \u201cThe Big Sleep,\u201d and its extraordinary metamorphosis into Howard Hawks\u2019 \u201cThe Big Sleep.\u201d Since our first book on Sam Peckinpah, Merrill and I have been leading a (writer\u2019s) life of crime, with essays on \u201cMystic River\u201d and \u201cDouble Indemnity\u201d preceding the larger Altman and Hawks projects. I\u2019ll be teaching several courses next year on \u201cHemingway, O\u2019Connor, and Carver and the Modern American Short Story,\u201d as well as a half block on Terrence Malick, whose \u201cDays of Heaven\u201d I lectured on this spring for the Film and Media Studies program, as well as the Colorado Springs community. Lastly, I\u2019ll be teaching a course on film history and theory in the second semester. am not sure \u2014 I have no idea what it will be like to no longer get up and go to class every morning.\u00a0Here are some ideas of what I think I might do:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s3\">Travel \u2014 I have a list of places I\u2019d like to see, and will start working on the list.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s3\">Research \u2014 I am working on several research projects that I am planning to finish in the next couple of years.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s3\">Spend time with my mother, my children, and my friends.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s3\">Lie on the couch reading mysteries \u2014 needs no further explanation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span
