Running from Sept. 24 to Nov. 29, a series of events, many of them open to the Colorado Springs community as well as members of the Colorado College community, were held in the weeks before <span class=\"s1\">and after the 2018 midterm elections. Photo by Jennifer Coombes<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\">The symposium included:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>Vincent Hutchings<\/b><\/span>, professor of political science, University of Michigan Hutchings\u2019 general interests include public opinion, elections, voting behavior, and African American politics. He recently published a book, \u201cPublic Opinion and Democratic Accountability: How Citizens Learn About Politics,\u201d that focuses on how, and under what circumstances, citizens monitor (and consequently influence) their elected representative\u2019s voting behavior. Edsall<\/b><\/span>, American politics writer for<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><i>The New York Times <\/i>Edsall is best known for his weekly opinion column for <i>The New York Times<\/i> online and for his 25 years covering national politics for the <i>Washington Post<\/i>. A <i>New York Times<\/i> contributing op-ed writer, he covers American politics, inequality, campaign strategy, and demographics. He received the Wilbur Cross Medal from Yale University in 2014 and the Presidential Initiatives Award from the University of Michigan from 1987 to 1989. From 1990 to 1995, Holt held a John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Fellowship and from 1995 to 1996 was a fellow in the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University. (Nov. 5)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b><\/b><span class=\"s2\"><b>Jim Stimson<\/b><\/span>, professor of political science<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>at University of North Carolina<br \/>\nStimson is the Raymond Dawson Distinguished Bicentennial Professor of Political Science at UNC and the author of \u201cTides of Consent: How Public Opinion Shapes American Politics.\u201d He returned to Chapel Hill in 1997 after appointments to the political science faculties at SUNY at Buffalo, Florida State, and the universities of Houston, Iowa, and Minnesota. Photo by Jennifer Coombes<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>John Kasich<\/b><\/span>, governor of Ohio<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Kasich, the 69th and current governor of <\/span>Ohio, was elected in 2010 and re-elected in 2014. Kasich is a member of the Republican Party; his second term ends on Jan. 14, 2019, and he is ineligible for reelection due to term limits. Kasich unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination for President in 2000 and 2016. Kasich refused to support the Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and did not attend the Republican National Convention of 2016, which was held in his state; he reported that he wrote-in the name of U.S. Senator and former 2008 Republican presidential nominee John McCain. (Nov. 12)<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>Colorado Politics Panel<\/b><\/span><br \/>\nThe Colorado politics panel was made up of state representatives, public opinion experts, and Colorado political scientists. All experts in their fields, they broke down the election and how it matters for Colorado.
