{"id":17826,"date":"2022-05-06T08:19:38","date_gmt":"2022-05-06T14:19:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.coloradocollege.edu\/bulletin\/?p=17826"},"modified":"2022-05-06T16:35:43","modified_gmt":"2022-05-06T22:35:43","slug":"class-offers-students-a-taste-of-the-italian-renaissance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.coloradocollege.edu\/bulletin\/2022\/05\/class-offers-students-a-taste-of-the-italian-renaissance\/","title":{"rendered":"Class Offers Students a Taste of the Italian Renaissance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Students of the Renaissance <em>Banchetto,<\/em> a for-credit Half-Block course in January 2022, sampled from a <em>banchetto <\/em>\u2014 a banquet \u2014 of history, music, cuisine, and political intrigue. The goal was to have students engage their senses to experience what life might have been like at the peak of Europe\u2019s rebirth. The nine-day class was co-taught by Nancy Ekberg \u201974, a member of the performance faculty, and Dario Sponchiado, a visiting instructor.<\/p>\n<p>Mornings might bring the students together in Packard Hall to make music with early versions of familiar instruments, like lutes, crumhorns, and viola da gambas \u2014 ancestors of today\u2019s cellos and guitars \u2014 or hand-crank the wheel of a hurdy-gurdy to create the sounds of a bagpipe. Studies of the era\u2019s political rivalries, religious rebellions, and the constant threat of war as well as its cultural, artistic, and scientific revitalization spanning the 14th to 17th centuries were balanced by afternoons spent cooking and feasting. A grant from Creativity &amp; Innovation at CC helped support the class in 2022, which was held in person following a virtual class in 2021. The Renaissance <em>Banchetto<\/em> was first offered in 2019.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThis year, it\u2019s been very interesting to consider the history of the plague,\u201d Ekberg says. \u201cHistory repeats itself, and I think we have seen that the COVID-19 pandemic has altered our perspectives and practices just as the Black Death altered life in Renaissance times.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coloradocollege.edu\/newsevents\/newsroom\/2022\/renaissance-banchetto-class-offers-students-a-banquet-of-history,-music,-and-cuisine.html#.YnWigFTMKUk\">Read more about the class (+ photo gallery) \u00bb<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Students of the Renaissance Banchetto, a for-credit Half-Block course in January 2022, sampled from a banchetto \u2014 a banquet \u2014 of history, music, cuisine, and political intrigue.
