Betty Sowers Alt <\/strong>is not your typical 70-something grandmother. This one\u2019s got murder on her mind.<\/p>\n

The 1960 CC graduate, who lives near Pueblo, Colo., with her husband, Bill \u201963<\/strong>, is working on her seventh book with Sandra Wells, a former chief investigator with the district attorney\u2019s office in Pueblo.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll write on anything they\u2019ll pay me for or that will bring in money,\u201d Alt said. \u201cIt\u2019s fun, but we like to make money.\u201d<\/p>\n

Their titles include: \u201cMountain Mafia,\u201d \u201cMountain Murders,\u201d and \u201cWhen Caregivers Kill.\u201d Alt said the latter \u201cis not a nice book to read. But it\u2019s a necessary book.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alt\u2019s other books include \u201cBlack Soldiers, White Wars\u201d written with Bill, who was stationed all over the world with the military.<\/p>\n

The Alts have one daughter, fondly called \u201cthe brat.\u201d When Alt worked at the Pueblo Chieftain, their daughter spent many shifts in the newsroom. \u201cWe pulled out a file drawer and plopped the kid in.\u201d She\u2019s now a brigadier general.<\/p>\n

But as Alt said, \u201cI come from a gnarly line of women.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wherever they lived, Alt worked as a teacher, using her bachelor\u2019s in sociology from CC and master\u2019s in history from Northeast Missouri State University.<\/p>\n

CC \u201ctaught me to be much more exact and to search for things, so that when I did my master\u2019s, I did a thesis. Most of the people didn\u2019t. But I felt that the teachers at CC would not think that I had a master\u2019s unless I did a thesis.\u201d<\/p>\n

The woman who mowed lawns during World War II and sold hot dogs at baseball games during summer breaks still works today, lecturing on sociology at Colorado State University-Pueblo.<\/p>\n

\u201cWork is my life; it\u2019s always been my life,\u201d Alt said. \u201cI\u2019m a capitalist at heart.\u201d<\/p>\n
