\"Illustration\"This summer, Colorado College is offering three new, linked thematic blocks, courses that will integrate students\u2019 academic, practical, and professional experiences. These courses \u2014 aimed at helping students gain experience, earn credentials, and build a resume \u2014 are in addition to the numerous summer offerings of the past. The new blocks are:<\/p>\n

The Colorado Documentary Institute (June 2-July 24):<\/strong> This program provides students with a rigorous and creative filmmaking education bridged by a real-world professional experience. Students will make their own films while examining the history, codes, and conventions of the documentary form. Students also will participate in an externship at a relevant Front Range organization. Taught by Dylan Nelson and Clay Haskell, assistant professors of film and new media studies.<\/p>\n

The Outdoor Leadership Institute (May 28-June 5):<\/strong> This intensive program takes advantage of summertime in the Rocky Mountains. The interwoven courses, taken together, provide a balanced perspective of the natural sciences blended with research and academic pursuits. This interdisciplinary course has a strong emphasis on place-based learning, field observations, integrated interpretations, and leadership\/outdoor skills development. Taught by Colorado Outward Bound School staff; Howard Drossman, professor of environmental science; Mike Taber, associate professor and chair of the Education Department; and Zion Klos \u201909, former paraprofessional in the CC Geology Department and current doctoral candidate at the University of Idaho.<\/p>\n

The Student Journalism Institute (June 2-July 24):<\/strong> The institute teaches participants the key elements of research, reporting, writing, and editing, emphasizing ethics issues and use of the standard news conventions of \u201cThe Associated Press Stylebook and Libel Manual.\u201d Additionally, students will learn practical research tools such as databases, basic web design, and social media. Taught by Diane Alters, lecturer in journalism at CC. <\/p>\n
