Everything you need to know about SLAC 2017

What’s SLAC, you ask? The Selective Liberal Arts Consortium, which helps top-notch employers recruit students from outstanding liberal arts colleges – including CC. Recruiting happens over video, and on-site in Washington D.C. and New York City. Everything you need to know about SLAC is right here.

What’s so great about SLAC anyway?

All the things! First, SLAC gives you the opportunity to apply to high-level jobs and internships – without ever leaving campus. The program offers two video recruiting days that allow you to interview with employers of your choice via video chat. So, no flying, no missed vacation days, and no hotel expenses.

(But if you happen to be in New York or D.C. at the time of the recruiting events…by all means, attend the event, and interview with employers in person!)

Second, only students from seven colleges (including CC) get to apply to positions through SLAC. That means that your competition for great jobs is much lower than, say, finding one on Indeed or LinkedIn.

What else? The Career Center is here for you during every step of the process: applying, accepting an interview, actually doing the interview, and accepting a job offer. Make an appointment with us today!

Who should apply to SLAC?

Many of the opportunities offered through SLAC are full-time positions with benefits – so they’re meant for graduating seniors. Juniors and sophomores are encouraged to apply to the many internships offered, too.

Okay, so how do I get a job through SLAC?

Pretty simple. First, make an appointment at the Career Center to get your resume and cover letter reviewed. (This is optional, obviously, but don’t skip it. Quality application documents make a huge difference to employers.)

Second, when the application for the September recruiting event opens up on August 21, 2017, you get to start applying to jobs. All jobs are posted on SLAC’s Handshake site. Make sure to get your materials in before SLAC closes the application on September 17.

Finally, after you submit everything, employers will review your application materials. If they like what they see, they’ll select you for an interview. You’ll get an email, and then you’ll sign up for an interview slot on Handshake.

And don’t worry – if you’re selected for an interview, the Career Center can help make sure you’re feeling prepared for everything from case interview questions to the dreaded “So, tell me about yourself”.

What kind of jobs could I interview for?

SLAC 2017/2018 offers opportunities for students to interview for jobs in the following industries:

  • Education
  • Advertising
  • Marketing
  • Political organizing
  • Technology
  • Economic research
  • Consulting
  • Public policy
  • Law
  • Medical & scientific research

Which employers could I interview with?

Great question! Check out SLAC’s website to see which employers are offering positions this year. Since employers will be signing up for SLAC all summer, keep checking this list. It’ll just continue to grow!

P.S.: You can also find this information on Handshake.

What’s the timeline for the 2017/2018 SLAC?

If you want to apply for the September recruiting event, SLAC’s application opens on August 21, 2017 and closes on September 17. (Deadlines for the March 2018 recruiting event will become available closer to the event.)

If you want to apply for the New York or D.C. recruiting days, applications open September 27, 2017 and close November 13.

There are four recruiting events total: two video recruiting days, and two in-person recruiting days in Washington, D.C. and New York City.

The two video recruiting days will occur on September 28, 2017 and March 8, 2018. The New York City event is on January 5, 2018. The Washington, D.C. event is on January 8, 2018.

Stay up-to-date with SLAC’s timeline for more details, too.

Which other college students get to participate in SLAC?

The other six colleges, besides CC, that participate in SLAC are:

  • Bates College
  • Bryn Mawr College
  • Grinnell College
  • Haverford College
  • Vassar College
