#GRADSCHOOLBOUND: Wynter Scott ‘18

After graduating, Wynter will move to Nashville to earn her JD at Vanderbilt University Law School.

I am hoping to be challenged to think of solutions to problems posed by the current legal system by some of the greatest intellectual minds in the country. I am also hoping to receive a federal clerkship and/or to be recruited by some of the largest law firms in the United States.

My advice for students thinking about applying to grad school:

  1. Apply early in the cycle—as soon as applications open in November. Even if you’re not applying early decision, it is best to get your application in as soon as possible before the admission committee starts to get picky about the qualities of their class (this normally happens at the end of the cycle—usually in February).
  2. Be patient! Vanderbilt told me that I would have a decision eight to twelve weeks after submitting my application. In actuality, it took fourteen weeks to receive my decision. This application process is a long one, so try not to stress out too much about receiving a decision immediately after submitting your application.
  3. Even if the money is there, it may not be a perfect fit for you. Law school, and graduate school more generally, is an investment in time and money. Pictures can only show so much. Talking to people who attended can only show so much. Visit so that you’re able to make an assessment of the program for yourself.

Congratulations, Wynter!
