When Muse career coach Theresa Merrill<\/a> does mock interviews with her clients, she always leads with, \u201cTell me about yourself.\u201d It\u2019s good practice because that\u2019s often the very first thing an interviewer will ask you to do\u2014whether you\u2019re having a preliminary phone screen, speaking to your prospective boss, or sitting down with the CEO during a final round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even though it\u2019s one of the most common interview questions<\/a>, \u201cit almost always stumps them,\u201d Merrill says. It might seem like an easy win\u2014after all, you know all about<\/em> yourself!\u2014but responding to this invitation to talk about you in the context of a job interview can feel stressful and complicated. \u201cIt\u2019s challenging because it is broad, open-ended,\u201d Merrill points out. You might be thinking: Um, what do you want to know? How am I supposed to pick what to share out of my entire life story right now?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Luckily, you can prepare in advance and use this common opening prompt to your advantage, setting the stage for a successful interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
