Kaiba Lithicum sits across from me, smiling as he talks, clearly at ease in his workplace. But that hasn\u2019t always been the case. He\u2019s often struggled with how he\u2019s been treated at work as a trans person of color. \u201cBeing misgendered and\u00a0deadnamed<\/a>\u00a0several times in a shift became emotionally really, really hard,\u201d he says of one job that left him exhausted at the end of each day. \u201cI was just so tense.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lithicum, a social work student at Metropolitan State University of Denver, now works at the\u00a0LGBTQ Student Resource Center<\/a>, where he can bring his whole self. \u201cIt feels more authentic. I feel like I can work better. I don\u2019t need to show up and pretend to be someone I\u2019m not,\u201d Lithicum says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
