{"id":278,"date":"2018-07-31T18:05:46","date_gmt":"2018-07-31T18:05:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.coloradocollege.edu\/cca\/?page_id=278"},"modified":"2024-09-13T22:37:19","modified_gmt":"2024-09-13T22:37:19","slug":"award-and-fellowship-opportunities","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.coloradocollege.edu\/cca\/award-and-fellowship-opportunities\/","title":{"rendered":"National Award Opportunities (K-12)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The two main North American academic societies for Classics, the SCS and CAMWS, offer several awards open to K-12 teachers that recognize excellence in teaching, provide resources for professional development, and facilitate travel in the Classical world.<\/p>\n<h3>Society for Classical Studies (SCS):<\/h3>\n<p>SCS membership <strong>is <em>not<\/em> required<\/strong> for these awards.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #993300\"><a style=\"color: #993300\" href=\"https:\/\/classicalstudies.org\/awards-and-fellowships\/scs-awards-excellence-teaching-precollegiate-level\"><strong>SCS Awards for Excellence in Teaching at the Precollegiate Level<\/strong><\/a><\/span>: up to two annual awards, each winner receiving $500; airfare and lodging for the SCS Annual Meeting, the American Classical League Institute, or the Classical Association of Canada&#8217;s meeting; and $200 to their program for the purchase of educational materials. Candidates must be nominated and nominations are usually <span style=\"color: #3366ff\"><strong>due around the end of October<\/strong><\/span>.\n<ul>\n<li><em>Colorado teachers won one of three awards two years running: Lynn LiCalsi (Fairview High School, Boulder) in 2020 and Amy Rosevear (Cherry Creek High School, Greenwood Village) in 2019.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #993300\"><a style=\"color: #993300\" href=\"https:\/\/classicalstudies.org\/awards-and-fellowships\/david-d-and-rosemary-h-coffin-fellowship-travel-classical-lands\"><strong>Coffin Fellowship<\/strong><\/a><\/span>: supports travel abroad for secondary school teachers. Applications are usually <span style=\"color: #3366ff\"><strong>due in early February<\/strong><\/span>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/classicalstudies.org\/awards-and-fellowships\/pedagogy-award\"><strong><span style=\"color: #993300\">Pedagogy Award<\/span><\/strong><\/a>: open to pre-collegiate teachers and college and university faculty. Funds can be used to support travel abroad, conference attendance, or educational resources that will impact teaching and learning. Applications are usually <span style=\"color: #3366ff\"><strong>due in early April<\/strong><\/span>.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #993300\"><a style=\"color: #993300\" href=\"https:\/\/classicalstudies.org\/awards-and-fellowships\/zeph-stewart-latin-teacher-training-award\"><strong>Zeph Stewart Award<\/strong><\/a><\/span>: provides funding for those pursuing teacher certification. Applications are usually <span style=\"color: #3366ff\"><strong>due in early April<\/strong><\/span>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Classical Association of the Middle West and South (CAMWS):<\/h3>\n<p>CAMWS membership <strong>is required<\/strong> for these awards.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #993300\"><a style=\"color: #993300\" href=\"https:\/\/camws.org\/kraftaward\"><strong>Kraft Award for Excellence in Secondary School Teaching<\/strong><\/a><\/span>: the winner receives $500 plus airfare and lodging for the CAMWS annual meeting. Candidates must be nominated and nominations are <span style=\"color: #3366ff\"><strong>due November 15<\/strong><\/span>.\n<ul>\n<li><em>Colorado&#8217;s own Lynn LiCalsi (Fairview High School, Boulder) won the award for 2019.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/camws.org\/teachertraining\"><strong><span style=\"color: #993300\">Manson Stewart Teacher Training Awards<\/span><\/strong><\/a>: awards of up to $2050 to help those wishing to obtain primary- or secondary-level certification to teach Latin, whether for relevant coursework in Latin or Education. Applications are <span style=\"color: #3366ff\"><strong>due January 30<\/strong><\/span>.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #993300\"><a style=\"color: #993300\" href=\"https:\/\/camws.org\/newteacherawards\"><strong>Student Loan Assistance for New Teachers Award<\/strong><\/a><\/span>: Up to $1000 to help pay off recent B.A. and M.A.T. student-loan debt for a teacher in the first five years of service. Applications, including proof of student debt, are <span style=\"color: #3366ff\"><strong>due January 30<\/strong><\/span>.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #993300\"><a style=\"color: #993300\" href=\"https:\/\/camws.org\/newteacherawards\"><strong>New Teacher Start-Up Funds Award<\/strong><\/a><\/span>: $500 to reimburse one or more awardees in their first five years of service for books, supplies and classroom tech. Application, including receipts for purchased materials, are <span style=\"color: #3366ff\"><strong>due January 30<\/strong><\/span>.<\/li>\n<li><strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/camws.org\/breukeraward\"><span style=\"color: #993300\">John Breuker Jr. Award for Exceptional Promise in Latin Teaching<\/span><\/a><\/strong>:\u00a0$5000 for a secondary school teacher to participate in a group-study activity abroad, preferably in Italy and related to Latin. Applications are <span style=\"color: #3366ff\"><strong>due January 30<\/strong><\/span>.<\/li>\n<li>CAMWS awards three <span style=\"color: #993300\"><a style=\"color: #993300\" href=\"https:\/\/camws.org\/awards\/sgb.php\">summer travel grants<\/a><\/span>, for which primary, secondary and high school teachers are eligible. Applications are\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff\"><strong>due January 30<\/strong><\/span>.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Semple<\/strong> (typically $4500.00): for the American School of Classical Studies at Athens summer program.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Grant<\/strong> (typically $5000.00): for the American Academy in Rome summer program.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Benario<\/strong> (up to $3000.00): can be awarded for lots of great travel programs, including Paideia Institute summer programs for teachers and Villa Virgiliana programs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The organization also grants three <span style=\"color: #993300\"><a style=\"color: #993300\" href=\"https:\/\/camws.org\/awards\/excavation.php\"><strong>Excavation \/ Field School Awards<\/strong><\/a><\/span> of $2000.00 for participation in a summer excavation or field school at an archaeological site in the Greco-Roman world in any capacity. The award is open to teachers at all levels. Applications are\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff\"><strong>due January 30<\/strong><\/span>.<\/li>\n<li>CAMWS grants <span style=\"color: #993300\"><a style=\"color: #993300\" href=\"https:\/\/camws.org\/awards\/index.php\">additional awards<\/a><\/span> to support and recognize effective efforts to promote the study of Latin, help high school groups travel to sites or events related to the study of Classics, create partnerships between K-12 and post-secondary Classics teachers, and fund travel to the CAMWS annual meeting.
