Academic Departments, are you hiring?: If your department is looking to hire for a faculty position, please be sure to review the information on hiring international faculty in the Faculty Hiring & Recruitment Handbook. It offers guidance on your hiring process that can facilitate the acquisition of appropriate visas and work authorization in the United States for an international visiting or tenure-track hire. A well-planned hiring process now can make life for both you and the faculty you hire much smoother. You can find links to the CANVAS course on hiring and recruiting, as well as guidelines for hiring interntational faculty and scholars at the Dean of the Faculty website, here.

Build a Block Away Workshops: Interested in developing an off-campus block, but not sure where to start? The Build a Block Away Workshop is a great starting point. Learn about everything from itinerary development to budget modeling, best practices in experiential learning to selecting an SRA. And if you are not sure what an SRA is, then this workshop is for you. We hold them every even-numbered block and you don’t need to RSVP, just show up and get a quick primer on how to start from an idea and build yourself a block away. Our next two workshops will be:
- BLOCK 2: Friday, October 7 from 1pm-2:30pm in the Tutt Event Space (2nd Floor)
- BLOCK 4: Friday, December 9 from 1pm-2:30pm in the Tutt Event Space (2nd Floor)

Upcoming Fairs & International Education Week: Global Education has some big events coming up this Winter. We are asking for your help with one or more of these upcoming campus events.
December 1 — Summer Blocks Away Fair: Worner Lobby from 12pm-2pm. All the summer blocks will be represented. Please encourage students to attend, explore the options, and use Summit to apply for the summer block away of their choosing.
December 1 — World Cup Watch Party: Worner’s WES Room from 2pm-4pm. Follow up the Fair with a World Cup game between Spain & Japan. Our Summer Spain program and Summer Asian Studies course in Japan will be present to root on their teams as well as inform students of their programs (at halftime). Snacks representing both nations will also be served. This will be an RSVP event due to the limited size of the venue, so interested students should be directed to reach out to Global Ed staff about “tickets”.
February 5-11 — International Education Week at CC: We will be planning a week’s worth of events related to global issues, international student recognition, study & research abroad, and all things international. If your department or office would like to sponsor an event, a speaker, a social gathering, or wants to contribute to one of our events, please just get in touch with me (Allen Bertsche) to be a part of what we hope will be our biggest and most engaging IEW yet.
February 9 — Study Away Fair: Worner Lobby & Gaylord Hall, 12pm-2pm. This is the big one, like the State Fair but with a global focus and no food on a stick (sorry). All 2023-2024 faculty-led study away programs (blocks, semesters, half-Semesters) will be present along with many of our partners for semester abroad opportunities. We expect upward of 40 tables for students to visit.
|
International Student Support Network: Six offices from across campus, all with deep connections to our international students, have formed a blockly working group known as the ISSN (see title). This group will meet regularly to foster collaboration, communication, and better support structures for our international student population. They will hear regularly from the student-led International Student Advisory Board, and will work collectively to address concerns or expand opportunities for our students. If you are interested in learning more about the ISSN, you can reach out to it’s current Convening Chair, marnold@coloradocollege.edu“>Marlene Arnold. Offices involved include: The Butler Center, CLD Education, Housing, The Advising Hub, The Career Center, and the Center for Global Education & Field Study’s International Student & Scholar Services team.

Upcoming Deadlines: While Fall is not the busiest season for study away applications, there are some deadlines you and your students might want to keep in mind. Here are the upcoming deadlines related to study away:
October 7: Summer Off-Campus Blocks Proposal Deadline. As outlined above.
October 15: Deadline for Spring 2023 Semester Applications. Students interested in one of CC’s external partner-led semester programs, or interested in petitioning to join a semester away from beyond our pool of pre-approved programs must complete the Summit internal application (pre-approved) or petition (not pre-approved) by October 15. Approval for participation is required in order to receive the college’s endorsement on the program application and to be eligible for course credit transfer back to the college.
December 1: Deadline for Applications to Block 7-8 Half-Semesters: While full semester spring programs have an October 15 deadline, programs, such as the CC Russian, CC Chinese, or CC in France language programs, which allow for Block 7-8 participation have a deadline of December 1 for applications. All students interested in these language immersion programs should complete their applications on Summit by December 1.
January 30: 2023-2022 AY Block Notification Deadline. All departments that anticipate offering an Off-Campus Block (any course which takes students off campus for 10+ consecutive nights, domestic or international) in 2023-2024 should notify Global Education of the following by January 30 (Earlier, particularly December is always appreciated):
Course Block Course Instructor(s)
Course Name & Number Destination
Program Fee Total Brief Descriptive Blurb (100 words)
An Off-Campus Block is defined as any course which takes students off-campus for 10+ nights, whether domestic or international. These programs pre-enroll students before standard Banner registration and are eligible for block aid awards to offset costs for students on need-based aid. Programs of shorter duration may be considered Field Experiences and faculty can work with Drew Cavin in Field Study to plan, manage, and fund these experiences.
