Use an equity impact tool. When developing new policies, procedures, programs, or practices, use tools that evoke awareness concerning issues, circumstances, and contextual considerations that we may not be conscious of due to our limited lens. No one is an expert at all things, nor can one fully understand the lived experiences of others. Therefore, we must find ways to bring to light the implications of decision-making by prioritizing those most impacted. Equity impact tools can improve the proactive identification of barriers, resources, and remedies to address inequities that would have otherwise gone unnoticed. Such tools help us to combat paternalistic practices and counterproductive outcomes.
