“Congratulations, Class of 2024, you did it!” exclaimed L. Song Richardson at her final Commencement address as President of Colorado College. “You excelled in the classroom, guided by your dynamic professors and teachers. You did this while living through some of the most challenging times in recent history.”

CC’s 558 graduates began their college career in the fall of 2020, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, when social distancing, masks, and hand sanitizer ruled the day; when so much uncertainty from a deadly virus sent classes – and life – to a virtual world; and students faced all those stressors on top of a rigorous academic schedule. They also endured an increasingly polarized political landscape, war, a growing mental health crisis, and climate change.

It’s arguably the most coveted scholarship for incoming college students in Colorado. Each year, The Boettcher Foundation awards the Boettcher Scholarship – $20,000 per year for four years to be used for tuition and fees at any institution in the state – to its top 50 applicants. The foundation looks for community-minded, service-focused, high academic achieving difference-makers who will pursue their undergraduate degree in Colorado and benefit the communities in which they live.

Now, four years after receiving the award, Boettcher Scholar Owen Rask ’24 is looking back at his undergraduate experience at CC with a sense of pride and humility. He gives thanks to the Boettcher Foundation for providing him with not only financial support, but also a tight knit community of other Boettcher Scholars on campus.
