As we transition to a new calendar year, new semester, and significant changes in the national legal landscape, I want to take a moment to affirm that our commitment to equity and belonging through our policies and protocols remains a central value. To that end, we will continue to support members of our community who may be put at increased risk resulting from new federal policies.
As you know, immigration is a focus of new executive orders and other legislation. We are communicating today to remind students and employees of the legal protections and the rules in place that help to safeguard the privacy of personal information at Colorado College.
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) prevents employees from providing any identifying student information to entities outside the institution except under very narrow circumstances, such as a subpoena. This means we cannot confirm to an unauthorized party outside of CC that a person is a student. If you receive inquiries about a student from a person who is not an employee of the college, do not provide any information. Instead, direct all inquiries to the registrar who will coordinate a response on behalf of the institution. Read more about FERPA at Colorado College.
All employees’ personal information is also protected by our Privacy Policy. Any requests for an employee’s personal information or employment status should be directed to hr@coloradocollege.edu“> Human Resources.
If a person claiming to work for a government agency comes to your office or classroom, please direct them to Campus Safety.
If you receive a request for information in writing, whether by mail, hand delivery, or email, from someone outside the institution, be cautious. Even routine requests for letters of recommendation should not be fulfilled unless verified by the requester. The same guidance applies to queries attempting to secure copies of documents that contain the college’s non-public information, such as meeting minutes. As a private institution, we are not subject to laws that compel public institutions to share such information upon request.
CC remains committed to supporting our students and employees access to a safe and healthy campus environment.
