Don’t Miss the 2025 Abbott Lecture, Monday, Sep. 22
|
Join Professor Nadia Abu El-Haj for her talk, “Illiberal War: Trauma, Intent, and the Gaza Genocide,” on Monday, Sep. 22, 4-5:30 p.m.in Celeste Theatre.
In this talk, Abu El-Haj will explore the operation of a trauma imaginary as it works to recuperate the Israeli state and its citizens as “liberal subjects.” She begins by tracing a trauma discourse that references not October 7 per se, but the originary trauma of the Holocaust as expiation for Israeli-state violence. She will then juxtapose that discourse with the self-representation of soldiers as they film and celebrate their own cruelty and acts of destruction. In so doing, Abu El-Haj sketches a configuration of an Israeli-citizen-subject who diverges in cardinal ways from the (traumatized) “shooting and crying” figure of old, and discuss how, from this perspective, we might reframe basic suppositions regarding “the genocidaire” that developed in the shadow of Hannah Arendt’s Eichmann in Jerusalem.

SPEAK. A Film Screening and Conversation You Won’t Want to Miss
|
Don’t miss SPEAK.—a multi award winning Sundance documentary—on Wednesday, Sep. 24 at 6:30 p.m. in Celeste Theatre. This powerful film follows five high school students as they harness their voices to confront urgent issues such as disability rights, immigration, mental health, and LGBTQ+ advocacy. Described as “cinematically eloquent,” SPEAK., at its heart, is a portrait of a generation’s courage—students who turn debate into dialogue, and dialogue into change.
Following the screening, stay for an engaging panel conversation moderated by former CC Senior Vice President Mike Edmonds, and featuring President Whitaker and directors Guy Mossman ’95 and Jennifer Tiexiera, who will explore how storytelling and civic dialogue can shape culture, influence policy, and strengthen communities on campus and beyond.
Presented in association with the Visiting Series in Film and Culture, this hallmark event of the Conflict & Community: A Pluralism Series is a must-attend evening for anyone passionate about public speaking, advocacy, and the power of young voices to drive change.
