Welcome back! Once again, every second Wednesday of the block, we will share updates about various college initiatives including progress reports of the standing and temporary operational groups, important organizational and operational updates, College policy administration, Work of the College Series events, and other helpful information. 

Policies that are required for compliance and/or legal reasons and those whose revisions are deemed minor are not included in the 30-day comment period. However, these policies will be shared in the Work of the College message.

Policies intended for the Block 7 comment period must be submitted by Week 2 of Block 6.

30-Day Comment Policies

The following policies are now available for a 30-day comment period. Below, you will find the rationale for the proposed changes or drafts of new policies. To review the full text of these policies, please visit the Policy Administration section on the Policies website.

Intellectual Property

This policy outlines the ownership, use, and commercialization of intellectual property—including copyrights, patents, software, data, and trademarks—created by faculty, staff, students, and others using significant college resources or under sponsored agreements. It also details procedures for fair use, open access, revenue sharing, dispute resolution, and compliance with federal laws such as the DMCA and TEACH Act.

Freedom of Expression

The final draft of the Freedom of Expression Policy integrates feedback from students, faculty, and staff and reflects CC’s philosophy on freedom of expression.

Bereavement Leave Policy Change

Developed by Human Resources, the revised Bereavement Policy is being reintroduced to better support the CC campus community during times of personal loss. It reflects our commitment to compassion, equity, and inclusion by recognizing the diverse ways individuals experience and define grief. The policy provides all employees—regardless of role or tenure—with access to flexible, paid leave, while promoting consistency and operational continuity. This benefit can be used in conjunction with other types of leave offered at CC, such as sick, personal, or FMLA leave. Informed by feedback from IDEAL and the Cabinet, this update ensures our practices align with the needs of a supportive and inclusive workplace.

Space Governance Operational Group (SGOG)

Thank you to everyone who submitted a space request through the pilot process. The SGOG received five space requests during the fall submission cycle. After careful review and discussion using the established rubric for assessing space requests, a memo summarizing the SGOG’s recommendations was submitted to the COO for consideration. Those who submitted requests will receive a response by the end of Block 3.

Parent Experience Operational Group (PEOG)

PEOG has finalized our goals for the academic year and recently met to begin developing action plans to support them. Our first priority is creating a monthly parent communications calendar that will help guide proactive outreach to families—anticipating their questions and needs before they arise. We’ll continue refining this calendar throughout the remainder of the year, with plans to implement it fully for the next academic cycle.

Campus Events Operational Group (CEOG)

CEOG has been working on defining event categories. We’ve finalized event category descriptions, and Don Herbst will be entering these into Momentus to help users understand each category and choose the right one when reserving. Campus will receive information once completed.

Student Success Operational Group (SSOG)

SSOG’s five subgroups are focused on foundational work to support student retention and graduation. The Monitoring and Assessment subgroup is mapping data systems across the College to identify where student success information is housed and how definitions vary between systems. The Digital Student Experience subgroup is auditing the major declaration process from multiple angles, including reviewing department websites, analyzing historical data, examining policies, and assessing advising guidelines. The Awards and Fellowships subgroup is developing clearer responsibilities for fellowship advisors and researching peer institution models.
