In this newsletter:

The preregistration period is the time you review your degree audit in Stellic and submit (in Banner) which four courses you’d like to take in the Spring 2026 semester. The preregistration period runs from November 3-21. Schedule a meeting with your faculty advisor (required) and your Hub advisor (optional) to go over your degree progress and planned coursework. DO NOT wait until the last portion of the preregistration period to try to meet with your faculty advisor!

If you’re planning to take a language, you will want to ensure you have completed the necessary language placement process to submit language course choices during preregistration. 

If you want your Hub Advisor to review your plan but don’t want to meet, no problem! Plan your coursework in Stellic and send a request to your Hub Advisor to review your plan. 

There are times when you may need a COI (consent of instructor) pin to submit course choices for preregistration. If you are requesting permission to register for a course that you don’t have the prerequisite(s) for or the course description states a COI is needed, then please email the professor of that course to request the COI pin. You will utilize that pin to add the course to your preregistration tab in Banner.

Block 3 already! Unsure how this is possible but here we are. Get ready for a busy law block as we have several things scheduled.

CU Boulder Law School Visit

Let’s take a trip to Boulder and see what a law school is really like. Tours, class visits, 1:1 time with the admission dean. It’s a great way to get a feel for a school and what to expect even if you aren’t interested in Boulder.

Exhibit at the FAC – Open-Hearted – Open now through Jan. 17

Open-Hearted examines the history, meaning, and contemporary realities of health care and well-being. Moving beyond the individualistic framework of “self-care,” the exhibition reframes wellness as a collective project—one that necessitates an expansion of public health infrastructures across many levels of society.

How do you use the technology available to you?

-Stellic is a great starting off point if you need to figure out what all classes you need and when you can take them. Tutt Library also has great online resources, such as databases for research, so definitely take advantage of that.

Has there ever been a class that wasn’t your first choice, but surprised you?

-Freshman year I ended up in Intro to Global Climate Change, and while it wasn’t my top choice, I ended up learning a lot and really enjoying both the professor and the content of the class. We went on a really fun fieldtrip, and I enjoyed myself a lot more than I would have expected in a class that wasn’t directly related to my major.

What is your strategy if you’re waitlisted for classes?

An effective strategy I use when I am waitlisted for a class is to first reach out to the professor. This can be a simple email detailing why I want to take the course (perhaps it is a major requirement or a field I am strongly interested in). I email to show that I am seriously interested in the course. Second, I would identify backup options, which would entail going to Banner and selecting a few classes as a second choice. Your backup options should meet a specific requirement (like a major requirement) or align with your interests, and the classes should have open spots. Third, I would attend the first day of the class I am waitlisted for, even if I am not officially enrolled. This further demonstrates my interest to the professor and gives me a chance to speak with them in person (not just through email). If this does not prevail, I would meet with my academic or hub advisor and choose one of my backup options instead.  

Has there ever been a class that wasn’t your first choice, but surprised you?

Yes, I have taken a few classes at Colorado College that weren’t necessarily my first choice but ended up surprising me. Through the liberal arts education, you must fulfill a variety of general education requirements, so students graduate with a well-rounded foundation, prepared for the world. These Gen Eds can be daunting or frustrating, especially when they are in subjects I am not particularly interested in. One of these Gen Eds I needed to take this past year was my scientific analysis credit, and as a political science major, I was not looking forward to taking a science class (like chemistry). However, I signed up for a geology class, GY140, which turned out to be one of my favorite classes so far. Although it was very time-consuming and required extensive fieldwork, it was incredibly engaging and is an excellent representation of what I believe CC is all about (going on adventures, stepping outside, and trying something new). Ultimately, it is hard not to get something out of taking a class that you may not want to take at CC.
