The Board of Trustees Townhall Has Been Rescheduled

Dear Campus Community,

Due to a scheduling conflict, the Board of Trustees Townhall will be postponed until Nov. 27 at 2 p.m. MST. Upon registration, the Zoom link will be sent to you.
Given current events, rather than attempting to reschedule for this week, we would like to return this time back to our community in hopes that it can help all of us pause and reflect on how to come together during difficult times. We look forward to sharing with you the highlights and important notes from our meeting after Fall Break.
With thanks,

Colorado College Board of Trustees

Our Shared Commitment to One Another

Dear Campus,

We are a community that can demonstrate empathy, respect, and dignity for everyone, even for those with whom we vehemently disagree. Yet, recent events (including in meetings, emails, protests, and online) are raising serious concerns about the climate on our campus. We should be better than this at CC.

Let us be very clear:

We do not tolerate Anti-Semitism, or Anti-Arab and Anti-Muslim hate at Colorado College.

We do not tolerate hate, bigotry, or intimidation on our campus.

Each of us – faculty, staff, or student – has a responsibility to ensure that we foster an environment where everyone feels safe.

Members of our community may differ in their opinions on the conflict in the Middle East.

As a liberal arts college, we are committed to academic freedom, freedom of expression, and the First Amendment, even when the viewpoints expressed are hurtful to some. As an academic institution, we are committed to providing space for conflicting views. We will protect everyone’s right to share perspectives and acknowledge emotions. We will not censor opinions or ban groups on campus even when we disagree with them. These commitments, however, do not extend to expressions or acts of Anti-Arab and Anti-Muslim hate, Anti-Semitism, or other acts of hatred.

Freedom of expression and speech are not absolute. As we exercise these freedoms, we must each consider how it affects learning and work at the college. Any violation of CC policies, and/or local, state, and federal laws will have appropriate follow-up and consequences. Speech or behavior that amounts to severe, pervasive, or persistent harassment and/or acts (or threats of) physical violence against individuals or groups violates CC’s Freedom of Expression policy. Speech and behaviors must not endanger others, disrupt the normal business or activities of the college, damage property, or constitute illegal activity.

We ask everyone to report any incidents of harassment, violence, and/or discrimination to the Office of Civil Rights & Title IX

If you receive a threatening email that targets your life, safety, or property, call Campus Safety at (719) 389-6911, or dial 6911 on any CC phone.

We will continue to provide the space and the tools to share perceptions, to learn from each other, and to communicate with the intent to understand. We invite you to attend one of these conversations:

  • Monday, Nov. 13, 12:15-1:15 p.m., on Zoom; co-facilitated by Professor Inara Rodis and Ombuds Ty Nagamatsu
  • Tuesday, Nov. 14, 12:15-1:15 p.m., in-person at Sacred Grounds; co-facilitated by Chaplain Kate Holbrook and Ombuds Ty Nagamatsu

CC is a strong community and is even stronger when we honor one another’s humanity. It is our collective responsibility to do so.

With care,
