“Congratulations, Class of 2024, you did it!” exclaimed L. Song Richardson at her final Commencement address as President of Colorado College. “You excelled in the classroom, guided by your dynamic professors and teachers. You did this while living through some of the most challenging times in recent history.”

CC’s 558 graduates began their college career in the fall of 2020, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, when social distancing, masks, and hand sanitizer ruled the day; when so much uncertainty from a deadly virus sent classes – and life – to a virtual world; and students faced all those stressors on top of a rigorous academic schedule. They also endured an increasingly polarized political landscape, war, a growing mental health crisis, and climate change.

The College Experience is on Campus Next Week

The College Experience (CXP) is returning to CC on June 1 in Cornerstone Screening Room. CXP is a program funded by the El Pomar Foundation that helps scholars explore different college campuses for free. It allows the Pre-Collegiate Program to hold these college visits throughout the Pikes Peak region so that students can make informed decisions about where they want to pursue postsecondary education.

Charlotte Combe ’27 has won the Campus Compact Newman Civic Fellowship based on her potential for public leadership and her work in the community. Combe, a double major in Sociology and Gender Studies, is the co-founder of Substance Use Harm Reduction at CC (SUHR@CC).
Each year, CC’s president nominates a single candidate for the Newman Civic Fellowship. In her nomination letter this year, L. Song Richardson wrote, “Charlotte is driven by compassion and humanity. She believes a thriving community must care for all its members, especially its most vulnerable populations. This is why I know Charlotte has a bright future as a civic leader.”

Boettcher Scholar Owen Rask ’24 Looks Back on Accomplishments

By Alexa Gromko

It’s arguably the most coveted scholarship for incoming college students in Colorado. Each year, The Boettcher Foundation awards the Boettcher Scholarship – $20,000 per year for four years to be used for tuition and fees at any institution in the state – to its top 50 applicants. The foundation looks for community-minded, service-focused, high academic achieving difference-makers who will pursue their undergraduate degree in Colorado and benefit the communities in which they live.

Now, four years after receiving the award, Boettcher Scholar Owen Rask ’24 is looking back at his undergraduate experience at CC with a sense of pride and humility. He gives thanks to the Boettcher Foundation for providing him with not only financial support, but also a tight knit community of other Boettcher Scholars on campus.

Update on our VP for Advancement and Communications Search

Dear CC Community,

Earlier this year, the college began its search for a combined Vice President for Advancement and Communications. Our goal was to hire a leader who would foster collaboration and strategic partnerships, streamline engagement efforts, and capitalize on opportunities to share our vision, values, and achievements with internal and external audiences. We knew that finding the ideal candidate would be difficult, and that our search may not be successful. After conducting a nationwide search, we found this role required two very different skillsets, and our candidate pool did not bring sufficient expertise to lead both divisions at the VP level. Our ambitious fundraising and engagement goals and brand strategy work will each require considerable attention and long-term strategic direction. For these reasons, we no longer plan to merge the Office of Advancement with the Office of Communications and Marketing, and we will hire independent leaders for each division.

Our new Vice President for Advancement will be an internal hire, and the position will be posted in the comming days. Molly Bodnar, who has served as Interim Vice President for Advancement for the last nine months, is recommended for the position. She has been at CC for 11 years as Associate Vice President for Advancement Operations and served as campaign director for the Building on Originality fundraising campaign, which concluded in 2021. Prior to CC, Molly served as executive director of annual giving at the College of William & Mary, associate director of annual giving at the University of Michigan, and manager of the University of Michigan College of Engineering annual fund.

We are also determining our next steps for leadership in the Office of Communications and Marketing. Staff in that division are working collaboratively with me to outline the leadership qualities and core responsibilities they hope to see in this hire. We look forward to sharing more details in the coming weeks.

I’d like to thank the staff in the Office of Advancement and the Office of Communications and Marketing for your flexibility during these leadership transitions and throughout the search process. Many of you have taken on extra responsibilities during this time while continuing to drive forward our core institutional priorities. I appreciate you, and I am committed to hiring leaders that will complement and elevate the great work you already do.

Warmly,

Manya Whitaker

Interim President-Elect
