Earth Week is Almost Here!

Are you ready for a week of action-packed and meaningful events to celebrate and protect our planet? Coordinated by the Office of Sustainability and in conjunction with many other campus and community partners, Earth Week (Apr.17-22) will host various activities aimed at engaging the community in a week of learning, consciousness, and celebration. Make sure you check out our activity calendar below or on our website!
 
Day 1: Monday – Apr. 17
 
Activity 1: Journal and Journaling (EnAct)
Description: Students are invited to take home a free journal to write reflect on sustainability, the environment, etc.
Location: Worner Main Lobby

Activity 2: Trash Peak (Office of Sustainability Waste Team)
Description: Help divert waste from CC’s waste streams!
Location: The lawn in front of Worner

Activity 1: Planting Party (EnAct)
Description: Students are invited to grab soil, seeds, and small containers to use as pots to plant small plants in your home.

Activity 2: Art 21 Screening: Artists Addressing Environmental Concerns (Arts and Crafts)
Description: Come watch an environmental screening of the Art 21 playlist “The World is Yours”.

Activity 3: Linnemann Lecture: Communities, Food Systems, and Conservation (Environmental Studies Program)
Description: Listen to Meriwether Hardie’s talk about her work in places of tension in the worlds of conservation, food systems, and communities as she shares case studies, stories, mistakes, and successes from her experience of working with people and land.

Activity 1: Get Your Trail Map (EnAct)
Description: Grab some trail maps for nearby hikes!

Description: Play a bingo game about sustainable living habits and try to win sustainable utensils as a prize.

Description: Come help celebrate community, connect with nature, learn about gardening techniques, plant care, and sustainability practices!

Activity 1: Vegan Recipes (EnAct)
Description: Pick up some healthy and environmentally friendly vegan recipes which can reduce your carbon footprint.

Activity 1: Sunrise Watch on Hill (EnAct)
Description: Come sit on the grass outside in the early morning and watch the sunrise as it lights up Pikes Peak.

Activity 2: Arbor Day (Facilities Services Landscape & Ground Team)
Description: Plant trees and flowers with peers to purposefully integrate the CC campus forest with the surrounding urban forest. Food will be provided at the event and all participating volunteers will get a FREE hat!

Activity 3: Reuse Workshops (Arts and Crafts)
Description: Stop by the Arts and Crafts Studio in the Worner Basement to create artwork that focuses on re-using materials.

Activity 1: OCC Trash Fairies: Fountain Creek Cleanup (OCC Trash Fairies and Westside Cares)
Description: Join OCC Trash Fairies and Westside Cares for another fun-filled cleanup of West Fountain Creek. (Gloves, trash bags, and cleanup supplies will be provided.) Register Here!

Activity 2: BreakOut – Partners in Housing (Collaborative for Community Engagement)
Description: Join the Collaborative for Community Engagement (CCE) to help Partners in Housing with some outdoor work at one of their properties. Register Here!

Activity 3: Earth Day Extravaganza (EnAct and Sunrise Movement)
Description: Join Sunrise and EnAct for an afternoon of food, art, phone banking, yard games, and an open mic to celebrate Earth Day at Hybl!

Last Chance for OOS Applications

Hurry! Time is running out to apply to be an intern for the Office of Sustainability next year as Handshake positions will close in less than five days on Apr. 16. The OOS will host six intern teams next year: Administrative Assistants, CC Exchange, STARS, Emissions Team, Waste, and Communications. Along with individual duties for each team, student employees are asked to lead a volunteer team, attend weekly one-hour team meetings, meet with the Sustainability Coordinator once a block, and engage with the Campus Sustainability Council.

Emissions Team Greenhouse Gas Technical Report


Toward the end of every academic year, the Office of Sustainability’s Emissions Team releases an annual Greenhouse Gas Technical Report.

Emissions Team member Erin Mullins 24 says that this report outlines CC’s emissions, how they have changed from last year, the sources of emissions, and an overview of CC’s carbon offsets. One key figure from this report spotlights Colorado College’s impressive 54% decrease in gross emissions from 2008 to 2022! “This year’s emissions figures demonstrate Colorado College’s ongoing commitment to sustainability. We continue to maintain our institutional carbon neutrality,” says Emissions Team member Holden Maxfield 25.

Material Recovery Facility Tour Recap

The Office of Sustainability thanks everyone who came out to attend the Sense of Place Material Recovery Facility Tour (MRF) on Apr. 5. This behind-the-scenes tour explored where CC’s recycling goes after it leaves campus. CC students, staff, and faculty learn about the importance of properly recycling their waste and how recyclables find a new life after they go into the bin. “The MRF Tour is one of my favorite Sense of Place programs because it provides valuable information and serves as a tangible demonstration of how important it is to properly place your recycling materials in the correct stream,” says Sustainability Coordinator Mae Rohrbach.

CC Exchange Pop-Up Event

Looking to do some spring cleaning? Join the Office of Sustainability for another CC Exchange Pop-Up Event at the Hybl Community Center Main Space today, Apr. 11, from 1-4 p.m. Bring items you no longer want or need and pick out some new ones! You can find a list of acceptable donations here. We hope to see you there!

CC Clubs

Sunrise Movement: Are you interested in becoming more involved in climate activism? If so, join the Sunrise Movement! As a national, youth-led, climate activism organization that advocates for political action on climate change, the Sunrise Movement has worked on rallies and informational workshops for bold climate action. They are currently working with the Colorado College Board of Trustees to divest CC’s endowment from fossil fuels and build environmental coalitions on campus. The group is open to everyone and meets every Tuesday from 5-6 p.m. in Tutt Library Room 105.

EnAct: Would you like to create a deeper and more personal connection to the surrounding environment? Then you should join the EnAct club! EnACT club Co-leader William Lewis 24 who works alongside Co-leader Eve Gutheinz 23, says that EnACT’s main objective is to “deepen personal connection to the surrounding environment to promote active engagement in ongoing local and national social change initiatives.” The club has recently been focused on restarting and gaining core members, as well as establishing some key events that they can repeat on a regular basis, such as nature walks on first Tuesdays at 2 p.m. and movie nights, typically during the second or third week of each block. The club has meetings on the first and third Monday of each block at 12:15 p.m. in the Office of Sustainability, located at 1004 N Weber St.

CC Student Farm: 
Do you want to get hands-on with the environment? Join the CC Student Farm club

“The Colorado College Student Farm intends to create an active space of ecological and community sustainability, based on land stewardship through intentional engagement with small-scale, hand-powered agriculture. We hope to plant vegetables and fruits, build community through farming, educate students on agricultural practices and land care techniques, and provide a space for everyone interested in engaging more with the land their food comes from. The Student Farm will be a place for everyone, especially those with little experience, to interact with the environment and their food in a positive and engaging way, with tangible produce for students to consume,” says Kai Matthiasson 24, CC Student Farm Club Chair. Matthiasson notes that some key club accomplishments this year have been the consistent improvement of the land and soil health, helping students understand the farm to table process, and having grown a crop of lettuce that was donated to the CC Pantry. The club meets on Sundays and Fridays from 1-3 p.m., though the timing is subject to change based on weather conditions.

Arts Administration Internship

The Bee Vradenburg Foundation is committed to furthering career opportunities for emerging arts leaders and advancing equity in the Pikes Peak Region’s arts sector. The Foundation provides support each year for up to two paid internships at arts organizations in El Paso County, Colorado, with emphasis on young professionals identifying with, and arts organizations serving, minoritized communities. Denver Museum of Nature & Science Internship

This internship will be a mixture of activities that diversify students’ exposure to research, collections, and/or outreach, grounded in the outwardly-focused environment of the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. The intern will catalog fossil, mineral, and rock collections and/or make paleogeographic geology and fossil maps spanning the last 500 million years of the Earth’s history. Their experience will be augmented by short-term opportunities to work in our preparation labs, in the field, and to participate in events where they will engage directly with the public. This internship offers a unique opportunity to work in a large nonprofit institution, gain experience with museum collections and/or databases, develop relationships with scientists from a diverse array of fields, handle world-class fossil and mineral specimens, conduct some fieldwork, and engage in informal education and museum life.

International Student Orientation Mentor

International Student Orientation (ISO) Mentors are a vital part of the events and programming that take place during the fall orientation program and throughout the first two blocks of the fall semester to welcome new international students and exchange visitors.  The ISO Mentor position is a great opportunity to organize and execute events, build leadership skills, and be a part of welcoming new students to our CC community. The 3-day International Student Orientation (ISO) program is planned to be held in person. Additional programming with ISO Mentors will occur over Blocks 1 & 2.

Invertebrate Paleontology Curation Internship

The intern will participate in the Noblett-Witter intern program through the Colorado College Department of Geology to catalog the Columbia University Invertebrate Paleontology Systematic Collection of Phylum Echinodermata in order to broaden access to the collection. The intern will work in a team of two, under the supervision of a Museum Specialist and AMNH collections staff, to rehouse, conserve, and catalog @5000 lots of marine fossils. Rehousing and conservation will protect the physical specimens while cataloging, databasing and imaging will ensure essential tools are in place for effective collection management – retrieving specimens, monitoring the collection for risks, and maintaining an accurate inventory. It will provide a valuable resource for special exhibitions and education programs for students, teachers, and the general public. Project results will be disseminated through the museum’s website, interns’ blogs, staff presentations, and posters at professional meetings.

This workshop for Sociology majors will address common myths (and truths) related to majors and career planning. This session will help you learn how to proceed if you are unsure about career goals and how to plan and prepare for the transition to post-CC life. We will briefly cover best practices for assessing your interests, skills, and values as they relate to careers, finding your “why” to identify work that is purposeful and meaningful, and launching your job and/or internship search.

U.S Figure Skating – Marketing & Communications Intern Spring Semester 2023

The Intern, Marketing & Communications Intern, will support the Director of Marketing with ongoing programs and events. Responsibilities also include:
  • Managing the tagging of social posts through our social media vendors,
  • Providing copywriting/editing support
  • Contribute to U.S. Figure Skating’s social media strategy, including but not limited to content creation and branded campaigns.
  • Contribute to SKATING magazine, Learn to Skate USA blog, and other publications as assigned, including the opportunity for feature writing.
  • Create and grow our Quarterly Fan Newsletter and find ways for fans to sign up.
  • Research potential partners for U.S. Figure Skating and their tent-pole events
  • Gathering insights from survey results and other data collection methods
  • Program ideation and implementation

    In addition, all tasks assigned by the Manager, Marketing Analytics and Insights will be the responsibility of the Intern, Marketing. Emphasis will be placed on the candidate’s ability to work independently and in a team environment, accuracy, customer service, creativity, and timeliness.

Commencement 2023 is around the corner!

The biggest annual celebration on the CC campus — Commencement — is coming up Sunday, May 28, 8:30 a.m., in Ed Robson Arena. That’s less than 50 days away!

Additional end-of-year and Commencement festivities include:

  • Honors Convocation, Tuesday, May 16, 11 a.m., Shove Memorial Chapel. This is CC’s opportunity to honor outstanding students and faculty. The annual program includes departmental awards, all-college awards, Just World Awards, faculty teaching and professorships, and awards from the CC Student Government Association. All members of the campus community are welcome to attend!

  • Baccalaureate, Saturday, May 27, 3 p.m., Shove Memorial Chapel. This event is open to graduating seniors and two guests per graduate, overflow viewing for this event will be in the Kathryn Mohrman theater, and an online livestream of the ceremony will be available. Baccalaureate provides a quiet, intimate opportunity to reflect on this rite of passage, hear from a faculty member, and celebrate our talented students.

Commencement Speaker and Honorary Degrees

CC recently announced that former U.S. Representative Liz Cheney ’88 will present the 2023 Commencement address, and Mike Edmonds, Robert Moore, Hilaree Nelson ’95 (in memoriam), and Robin Wilson will be presented with honorary degrees. Baccalaureate Speaker

Colorado College today announced that Richard Fernando Buxton, associate professor and chair of the Classics Department, has been selected as this year’s Baccalaureate speaker. Professor Buxton has been teaching at CC since 2014 — click here for his bio.

Want to get involved? This year’s Commencement celebrations take place over Memorial Day weekend, and we anticipate challenges recruiting the staff and campus volunteers needed to execute these remarkable events. If you will be in town, please consider signing up to volunteer! Stay tuned in the coming weeks for a signup sheet with specific roles, or email Brenda Soto at bsoto@coloradocollege.edu to express your interest.

Ticket Information

A limited amount of standing-room-only tickets will be available for faculty and staff after May 22, once students have claimed all the guest tickets they need. A livestream will be available for those who cannot attend in person.

Commencement 2023 is around the corner!

Dear CC Seniors,

The biggest annual celebration on the CC campus — Commencement — is coming up Sunday, May 28, 8:30 a.m., in Ed Robson Arena. That’s less than 50 days away! 

We are proud to honor the many accomplishments of this class as well as the MAT graduates! We want to make sure you have the information you need to plan for this important occasion. You will receive periodic Commencement emails from now until May 28, so please keep a close eye on your inbox as well as the Commencement 2023 website for updates.

Apply to Graduate
Don’t forget! Graduating seniors must submit their application to graduate by Friday, April 28 in order to walk in the ceremony this spring. If eligible, you will find the link to the application on your student menu in Banner SSB. It only takes a few minutes to opt in to the ceremony, provide height information for a gown, and confirm diploma name and mailing address. You will not be able to claim guest tickets until you complete this process.

Ticket Information

Weekend Details
President L. Song Richardson is pleased to host a President’s Reception for all to enjoy on Tava Quad immediately following the ceremony. In addition to Commencement and the reception, graduation festivities also include:

Commencement 2023 is around the corner!

Dear Colorado College MAT Grads,

The biggest annual celebration on the CC campus — Commencement — is coming up Sunday, May 28, 8:30 a.m., in Ed Robson Arena. That’s less than 50 days away! 

We are proud to honor the many accomplishments of the Class of 2023, as well as the MAT graduates! We want to make sure you have the information you need to plan for this important occasion. You will receive periodic Commencement emails from now until May 28, so please keep a close eye on your inbox as well as the Commencement 2023 website for updates.

Apply to Graduate
Don’t forget! Graduates must submit their application to graduate by Friday, April 28 in order to walk in the ceremony this spring. If eligible, you will find the link to the application on your student menu in Banner SSB. It only takes a few minutes to opt in to the ceremony, provide height information for a gown, and confirm diploma name and mailing address. You will not be able to claim guest tickets until you complete this process.

Commencement Speaker
A few weeks ago, CC announced that former U.S. Representative Liz Cheney ’88 will present the 2023 Commencement address, and Mike Edmonds, Robert Moore, Hilaree Nelson ’95 (in memoriam), and Robin Wilson will be presented with honorary degrees. Baccalaureate Speaker
Colorado College today announced that Richard Fernando Buxton, associate professor and chair of the Classics Department, has been selected as this year’s Baccalaureate speaker. Professor Buxton has been teaching at CC since 2014 — click here for his bio.

Ticket Information
Each graduate will have access to five seated and two standing-room-only guest tickets at no cost. Students will be able to claim these free guest tickets through Ticketmaster at the beginning of May, with specific instructions to come. Tickets must be claimed by Friday, May 19. A livestream will be available for those who cannot attend in person.

Weekend Details
President L. Song Richardson is pleased to host a President’s Reception for all to enjoy on Tava Quad immediately following the ceremony. In addition to Commencement and the reception, graduation festivities also include:

  • Honors Convocation, Tuesday, May 16, 11 a.m., Shove Memorial Chapel. This is CC’s opportunity to honor outstanding students and faculty. Block 6 and 7: Antiracist Book Club (ABC) Book

You’re invited to read and discuss the third       Antiracist Book Club selection for the 2022-23 academic year.  

 

The Block 6 reading will be “Hood Feminism: Notes from the Women That a Movement Forgot” by Mikki Kendalls. Today’s feminist movement has a glaring blind spot, and paradoxically, it is women. Mainstream feminists rarely talk about meeting basic needs as a feminist issue, argues Mikki Kendall, but food insecurity, access to quality education, safe neighborhoods, a living wage, and medical care are all feminist issues. All too often, however, the focus is not on basic survival for the many, but on increasing privilege for the few. That feminists refuse to prioritize these issues has only exacerbated the age-old problem of both internecine discord and women who rebuff at carrying the title. Moreover, prominent white feminists broadly suffer from their own myopia with regard to how things like race, class, sexual orientation, and ability intersect with gender. How can we stand in solidarity as a movement, Kendall asks, when there is the distinct likelihood that some women are oppressing others?

In her searing collection of essays, Mikki Kendall takes aim at the legitimacy of the modern feminist movement, arguing that it has chronically failed to address the needs of all but a few women. Drawing on her own experiences with hunger, violence, and hypersexualization, along with incisive commentary on reproductive rights, politics, pop culture, the stigma of mental health, and more, Hood Feminism delivers an irrefutable indictment of a movement in flux. An unforgettable debut, Kendall has written a ferocious clarion call to all would-be feminists to live out the true mandate of the movement in thought and in deed.

The ABC is meant to be self-led and asynchronous. We encourage you to create space to discuss these books and their topics in the communities you already inhabit (e.g., department meetings, athletics teams, student clubs/organizations, etc.) and at your own pace.
