E-Waste Recycling on Campus

Office Of Sutainibility
 Office of Sustainability
Enhancing Educational Experiences within the Office of the Dean of the College

Updated E-Waste Pickup Process for Offices & Departments
E-waste recycling is a vital component of our sustainability efforts on campus. Most electronic devices pose serious risks to our environment if not discarded properly due to the toxic materials used in their manufacturing. The Office of Sustainability has updated our process to pick up e-waste in order to streamline requests. If your office or department has e-waste, please fill out our new online form to schedule a pickup. A representative from the Office of Sustainability will be in touch with you within 72 hours about our next pickup time.

Some requirements include being able to lift bikes up to 60lbs, having the ability to work independently for at least one 4–5-hour shift per week on average, and balancing scheduling needs with other student field techs. Engage in Week of Action

CC’s Collaborative for Community Engagement’s (CCE) Week of Action has so far been a blast! The CCE aims to further the public purpose of a liberal arts education by engaging the campus community to tackle pertinent local issues. There is still time to sign up for the many events taking place later this week. Activities include a campus-wide food drive for the CC Pantry Exchange on campus, building biking and walking trails with Concrete Couch, planting garlic at the CC Farm, and more!

Colorado Water Tour 2022 Recap

Splish splash, the Colorado Water Tour was a bash! Close to 20 CC students embarked on the tour, which left campus shortly after Block 1 concluded. Students explored and learned about various water infrastructure projects such as the Catamount and Montgomery Reservoirs and the Otero Pump Station, which alone helps supply close to half of all water to Colorado Springs. They also had the pleasure of relaxing at the Mount Princeton Hot Springs after a fun-filled day! Rounding off the tour, students visited Larga Vista Ranch near Pueblo, Colorado where they heard first-hand from farmer Doug Wiley about how ranching has changed over time. Student perspectives about the importance of the water supply chain changed over the course of the tour with participant Diana Buda ‘24 highlighting that she “gained a new perspective on how elaborate the process of getting water to cities is” and how she now has “an appreciation for the various people who are constantly tending to cities’ water needs and have devoted their lives to this important cause.” Check out future Sense of Place trips offered through the Office of Sustainability!

The Gold Mine – A Resource for CC’s Research Grant Community (Block 2, 2022)

News for and about CC’s Thriving Research Grant Community

News for and about CC's Thriving Research Grant Community

Invitation to Join the Feedback Loop

Dear colleagues,

In 2021, a handful of grants officers from small liberal arts colleges organized four webinars featuring winners of highly prestigious grants & fellowships (ACLS, Ford, Guggenheim, & NSF CAREER) from small liberal arts colleges.

One of the common refrains from the winners was the value of sharing multiple drafts with as many colleagues as possible in the months leading up to the deadline – colleagues in the same field, those in adjacent fields, even those in very different fields.

This practice gives the applicant multiple opportunities to refine their language and strengthen their argument. I believe the benefits of this process also come full circle, benefiting the readers in various ways, particularly when preparing their own proposals for external funding down the road.

CC faculty have been informally offering this support to each other for years. Let’s bring this fruitful practice out of the shadows, invite more intentional participation, and encourage greater connection among our grant-seeking community.

For more information on the process (and to access the 2021 webinar recordings), please visit this invitation to join the Feedback Loop.

Small Group Grant Gathering – Fulbright

In Summer 2022 we began developing Small Group Grant Gatherings to help faculty make progress in the grant development process. These groups are intended to help faculty developing a proposal for submission in the next 12 to 24 months. In order to fold more faculty into these affinity groups, we will be holding follow-up sessions in the upcoming year. On Thursday, Oct. 6th we will discuss the Fulbright Program.*

Lunch will be available by 12:15 p.m; the session will begin at 12:30 p.m. The presentation, “Five Ways to Prepare for a Future Fulbright Application,” will end by 1:30 p.m., however participants are welcome to remain until 2 p.m. to discuss individual interests and circumstances. Proposal News

CC Joins Diplomacy Lab

Thanks to a compelling proposal prepared by Assistant Professor of Political Science Jiun Bang, Colorado College has recently joined a network of ~45 colleges and universities in the Department of State’s Diplomacy Lab program.

“Students participating in Diplomacy Lab explore real-world challenges identified by the Department and work under the guidance of faculty members… This initiative allows students to contribute directly to the policymaking process while helping the State Department tap into an underutilized reservoir of intellectual capital.”

There will be two deadlines each year by which brief 200-word “bids” are submitted to the Department of State. The next deadline for participating is Oct. 18th for research projects to be conducted in Spring 2023. We invite CC faculty to to learn more.
