Ditch the Dumpster
Every year as CC students graduate, study abroad, or relocate off-campus, they often find themselves with excess belongings that they cannot take home. Unfortunately, many of these items are disposed of in landfills, despite being suitable for recycling, composting, or donation. Ditch the Dumpster is an annual program coordinated by the Office of Sustainability in collaboration with Residential Experience. It encourages students to donate their gently used items instead of throwing them away during move-out. Accepted items include clothing, hangers, unopened food, cleaning supplies, outdoor gear, and small household/dorm items, etc. Ditch the Dumpster starts on Friday, May 10 at the Mathias Lobby, Loomis Lounge, South Hall Lobby, and Hybl Community Center. Donations will end for the Big 3 (Mathias Lobby, Loomis Lounge and South Hall Lobby) on Thursday, May 16, and for Hybl on Monday, May 20.
Some donated items will go to the CC Pantry Exchange and will be saved for future move-ins. This year CC is also teaming up with RISE, an initiative dedicated to improving southeast Colorado Springs through resident-driven initiatives. RISE has pinpointed smaller non-profit organizations and other impactful community initiatives to receive targeted donations based on their specific needs through the Ditch the Dumpster program.

Earth Week Recap
The Office of Sustainability extends gratitude to all who contributed to the organization, support, and participation in Earth Week 2024. This annual celebration, comprising the Crosswalk Cafe, Food Scrap Tie-Dyeing, The Linnemann Lecture, Arbor Day, etc., showcased a diverse array of learning and engaging activities. The offices and clubs that organized these events highlight diverse facets of sustainability.
We deeply appreciate everyone who devoted their time and efforts for the success of Earth Week 2024.

Greenhouse Gas Technical Report
The Greenhouse Gas Technical Report, created by the Emissions Team, outlines CC’s emissions and how they compare to previous years. This work is vital for knowing CC’s impact, which is crucial for making sustainable advances, and knowledge about GHG inventories are a crucial part of understanding our current emissions. The report outlines industry jargon and methodology, making it accessible for all students, staff, and faculty! The report was released on Friday, April 26. Thank you to the Emissions Team for working so diligently to create this important report.

Sustainable Wednesday Recap
In Block 7 the Communications Team ran the Sustainable Wednesday table and engaged with the CC community through a fun game of jeopardy. Students answered questions about sustainability on campus and the upcoming Earth Week events in exchange for donuts. Volunteers Molly Vance ’27 and Adeline Turner ’27 were excited to see how much their peers knew about sustainability at CC, “Everyone who played surprised us, answering at least one of our questions correctly, and we had a blast getting to meet them!” Thank you to everyone who participated, and we hope you enjoyed Earth Week activities last week.

Meet the Team
Ian Johnson, Director of Sustainability, works with many different departments, as sustainability touches so many areas. His day ranges from working with student interns, doing guest lectures, supporting class projects, or working with colleagues in Facilities Services and CC’s Cabinet. Ian’s favorite part of his job is the diversity within each day, and says, “It’s kind of the best of all worlds!”
Mae Rohrbach, Sustainability Coordinator, says “Each day brings its unique flavor, but the core of what I do remains constant: empowering and supporting sustainability initiatives led by students, both within the office and across campus.” Mae’s days are filled with teaming up with students, staff and community members, which is an incredibly rewarding experience.

End of the Year Recap
As we approach the end of another academic year, the Office of Sustainability is grateful for the extensive support and collaboration from our campus partners and the student body at large. Under the leadership of Director Ian Johnson, Coordinator Mae Rohrbach, and our devoted intern teams and volunteers, CC continues its commitment to sustainability. Throughout this year, we came together to organize and co-host opportunities for the CC community to engage, including CC Exchange pop-ups, the CO Water Tour, and Passion to Action workshop series, as well as maintained ongoing initiatives like PikeRide, the Campus Compost Program, and the CC Plant Exchange, working diligently behind-the-scenes to advocate and enact changes across the college around sustainability.
