TRY USING AN ADEI TIP OF THE MONTH…

Dismantling systems of oppression requires creative and diverse approaches (There is more than one tool in the toolbelt). Fighting for justice does not always look the same. The fact that we don’t all approach a fight the same way does not mean we aren’t all working toward the same goal. It just means that we may have a different way of getting there. Be careful not to judge and generalize the actions of others because they do not meet a predefined standard of action; consider that it is the standard itself that perpetuates white supremacy culture serving as a measure to shift oppression. This enemyfying becomes a catalyst to divide and conquer, diverting our attention from the real issue by capitalizing on separating us. Togetherness leads to the advancement and justice we are all seeking to achieve. 
ADEI in Action!
The Native American Student Union (NASU) and Native and Indigenous community leaders organized another successful CC PowWow. This event was filled with vendors, dancers, and influential Native and Indigenous peoples and allies, many of whom traveled far and wide to support and be in spiritual community with one another. 

Goodbyes Are Never Easy…


Dear CC Community,

I want to share that I am starting a new position as Associate Dean of Faculty at Williams College in early June. While this move is welcome for professional and personal reasons, I am sad to be leaving CC and Colorado Springs.

My last day will be May 1st.

Thank you: 
  • For the opportunity to work for a PWI liberal arts college that knows what it means to commit to antiracism, diversity, equity, and inclusion,
  • For the relationships, connections, and friendships, and
  • For the growth-enhancing challenges.
My own ADEI lens has expanded exponentially as I have worked alongside you to change and transform Colorado College.  As you continue this work, please keep the sentiments of these two quotes in mind:  

“Learning. . . is not linear, and meaningful learning resists being quantified”. (Jesse Stommel in Undoing the Grade). 
“Pedagogical strategies can determine the extent to which all students learn to engage more fully the ideas and issues that seem to have no direct relation to their experience”. (bell hooks in Teaching to Transgress).

Block 7 People Connections – Human Resources Newsletter
This newsletter contains important details about Benefits Open Enrollment, helpful information about the current Performance Conversation, and an opportunity to sign up for the Compensation Open Forum. 

Benefits Open Enrollment

CC makes significant investments in our benefits offerings to support you as an employee. To get the most value from these investments, we encourage you to review your selections during open enrollment.  
The eBenefits portal provides a convenient platform for you to review your current selections and make any necessary changes. The annual Benefits open enrollment period will run from Wednesday, May 1, 2024, to Friday, May 31, 2024. This is your chance to add, delete, or modify any of your benefits, and to enroll or disenroll eligible dependents. Most changes made during this period will take effect on July 1, 2024. 
During open enrollment, you’ll also have the opportunity to enroll for supplemental life insurance up to the guaranteed issue amount through The Hartford, with a one-time chance to waive the requirement for Evidence Of Insurability (EOI). Optional life insurance may be purchased in increments of one to five times your annual salary with a maximum of $500,000; the cost per $1,000 of coverage is based on an age-rated chart. You can make this update through the eBenefits portal. 
If you would like to keep your current benefits as they are, you do not need to do anything during open enrollment, unless you currently participate in the flexible spending account (FSA). The FSA is the only benefit that must be renewed each year online. You can complete this renewal through the eBenefits portal.

Feedback Practices 

The April Performance Conversation for benefit eligible staff is currently underway! This training video is available to walk you through the Performance Conversation process and answer many of your questions.  
The quarterly Performance Conversations were intentionally designed to take less time and take some of the burden off our employees and supervisors who already do so much. Each party will be asked two short-answer questions, two rating questions, and will select an overall rating. Since the lookback period is only three months, rather than a full year, your answers should be 3-5 sentences (or bullet points) that best describe your contributions and feedback provided over last quarter. If you have not already, take a few minutes to log into Bridge and complete your Self-Review, Manager Review, and Performance Conversation prior to the deadline of Friday, May 3. 
To help support you through these changes, Sara San Souci has office hours available. Schedule a time to meet and get support. 

Compensation Open Forum

Sign up for the Compensation Open Forum on April 23, 3:30-4:30 p.m. 
where we will discuss the Compensation Philosophy and the compensation structure (rebanding) project.

Commencement is a Month Away!

Commencement celebrations are only a month away!

It’s hard to believe, but our seniors are in their final weeks at CC! Commencement is set for Sunday, May 19, at 8:30 a.m., in Ed Robson Arena. 

Please take note of the dates below and keep a close eye on your inbox and the Commencement 2024 webpage for important year-end details for the campus community.

We’re in need of faculty and staff volunteers to support Commencement events. Want to get involved and be a part of the year-end excitement? Please consider signing up to volunteer! Honors Convocation  

Tuesday, May 7, 11 a.m., Shove Memorial Chapel  

This is CC’s opportunity to honor outstanding students and faculty. The annual program includes departmental awards, all-college awards, and awards from the CC Student Government Association. All members of the campus community are welcome to attend.  

Sesquicentennial Ice Cream Social – To further honor CC’s commitment to our students for the past 150 years, the campus community is invited to a special sesquicentennial ice cream social on Tava Quad immediately following Honors Convocation (approx. 12:15 p.m.). This will also be an opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to bid farewell to our outgoing President, L. Song Richardson.  NOTE: If inclement weather is expected, this event will be moved to Armstrong Great Hall.
Rastall hours will be extended to 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7 to accommodate students and employees attending the all-campus events set for this day. 

Baccalaureate 

Saturday, May 18, 3 p.m., Shove Memorial Chapel  
Baccalaureate is a centuries-old graduation tradition, providing an opportunity to reflect on this rite of passage, hear from a faculty member, and celebrate our talented students. Students and their invited guests may attend in person (two guests per student). Seniors who have applied to graduate will receive an email in the coming weeks with instructions for how to claim tickets through Ticketmaster. A livestream of the ceremony will also be available online.  
Baccalaureate Speaker 
Rebecca Garcia, CC Professor of Mathematics, has been selected as this year’s Baccalaureate speaker. Each year, graduating seniors nominate a faculty member to deliver the Baccalaureate address. Professor Garcia’s nomination offered praise for her inclusive philosophy, honor of unique talents, and commitment to advocating for students.  
Share Your Well Wishes through Baccalaureate Blessings 
Students, faculty, and staff are invited to share their well wishes and words of celebration for graduates as part of this special CC tradition. Messages submitted by Monday, May 13 will be displayed on the jumbotron in Ed Robson Arena during Commencement on May 19, as well as online. Click here for instructions and ideas for how to submit a message.  

Departmental Receptions  

Click here for dates, times, and locations of all academic department-specific receptions, most of which take place after Baccalaureate on May 18. Invitations are sent directly from each department.  

Post-Commencement President’s Reception 

Immediately following the Commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 19, President L. Song Richardson will host a reception for all to enjoy on Tava Quad until approx. 12:30 p.m. 

Announcing This Year’s Honorary Degree Recipient  

CC is pleased to share that we will be presenting Jim Rosenthal ’70 with an Honorary Degree during Commencement. Honorary Degrees are awarded to individuals who have rendered distinguished service to society or made extraordinary achievements in their own profession. Learn more about Rosenthal and why he’s being honored. 

Faculty March Registration   

Faculty members must register in advance to march in the Commencement 2024 events, including Honors Convocation, Baccalaureate, and Commencement ceremonies. Please use this link to register to march. Ticket Information  

A limited number of standing-room-only tickets will be available for faculty who are not marching and staff after May 16. Stay tuned for more information on how to claim a ticket.   

Livestreaming will also be available for Commencement, Honors Convocation, and Baccalaureate events.   

Important Parking, Accessibility, and Venue Details 

Parking – Commencement attendees may park anywhere on campus (no fees or permits apply), except the third floor of the Ed Robson Arena parking garage on East Dale Street. The third level of the Ed Robson Arena parking garage is reserved for guests with limited mobility who require parking close to the venue. Accessible parking is available on all levels of the Ed Robson Arena parking garage and in other parking lots on campus as well. 

Accessibility – CC welcomes individuals with disabilities. Please see the Commencement webpage for information on accessible parking and accommodations available within Ed Robson Arena. 

CLEAR BAG POLICY – Ed Robson Arena has a clear bag policy, which will be enforced during Commencement weekend. Only clear bags and small clutch-sized purses will be allowed at entry. For more details on this policy, click here. Clear bags can be purchased at the Tiger Store just south of the main arena entrance.

The countdown is ON. You are in your final weeks at CC! Commencement is set for Sunday, May 19, at 8:30 a.m., in Ed Robson Arena and we can’t wait to celebrate with you! 
As you head into the final block of the academic year, and the flurry of year-end activities that come with it, we’re sharing some need-to-know info to get ready for the big day. Please take note of the dates below and keep a close eye on your inbox and the Commencement 2024 webpage for further details and updates.  

Apply to Graduate Deadline is TOMORROW – Friday, April 19 


Graduating seniors must submit their application to graduate by Friday, April 19 to walk in the ceremony this spring. If eligible, you will find the link to the application on your student menu in Banner SSB. It only takes a few minutes to opt in to the ceremony, provide height information for a gown, and confirm other important details. Please also record your name in NameCoach to ensure proper pronunciation at the ceremony. 
IMPORTANT: You will not be able to claim guest tickets for Commencement or Baccalaureate events until you complete the registration process.

Commencement Photos 

GradImages will be on campus during Commencement weekend. Register in advance at gradimages.com/registration in order to view and purchase photos more quickly after graduation. 

  • Friday, May 17: Chapman Room at Ed Robson Arena, 1-4 p.m. (posed individual and family photos) 
  • Sunday, May 19: Commencement ceremony (graduates crossing the stage and posed with diplomas).  

You will be able to claim one free 5×7 photo from GradImages, courtesy of President Richardson. 

Ticket Information  

Seniors who have applied to graduate will receive an email at the beginning of May with instructions for how to claim tickets for the Commencement and Baccalaureate ceremonies through Ticketmaster. Graduates must claim their free guest tickets by Wednesday, May 15.  

  • Baccalaureate, May 18: Shove Memorial Chapel tickets issued on first-come, first-served basis (up to two guests per student) 
  • Commencement, May 19: Five seated and two standing-room-only tickets per student 

Please note: All desired tickets must be claimed at one time and transferred directly to guests. There will not be a waitlist for students and families who wish to claim more than the allotted number of guest tickets. Should you need additional tickets, fellow graduates are permitted to transfer any unused tickets to other individuals. Please request from fellow graduates directly and coordinate transfer of tickets via Ticketmaster.     

Livestream Option: For family, friends, and members of the campus community who are not attending in person, a livestream will be available online for Commencement, Honors Convocation, and Baccalaureate events.

Save the Date to Hear Angela Davis Discuss Her Book, Blue Legacies and Black Feminism
Please join us Friday, April 26 at 6:30 p.m. for an evening with Angela Davis. This exciting lecture will be held in Shove Memorial Chapel. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the lecture begins at 7 p.m.

Angela Y. Davis is Professor Emerita of History of Consciousness and Feminist Studies at University of California, Santa Cruz. An activist, writer, and lecturer, her work focuses on prisons, police, abolition, and the related intersections of race, gender, and class. Davis will be speaking on her recent book, Blues Legacies and Black Feminism as well as her general scholarly and advocacy work. This is a unique and exciting opportunity to hear from a legendary figure in civil rights, abolition, and feminist theory speak. A Q&A session will follow the lecture. Registration is required.

Question: How do I make the most out of Handshake?
Handshake allows students and alumni to connect with off-campus jobs, internships, fellowships, and volunteer opportunities locally and globally. Beyond searching for opportunities, workshops, information sessions, and employer visits are accessible to students through Handshake’s Event tool. Additionally, on the employer’s page, employers can be filtered by the CC Connected label, which indicates Colorado College has some connection to the company. Attending events and researching employers can help you build your network.
You can indicate your interests and discover new opportunities with Handshake’s curated personalized recommendations when searching for jobs. Handshake’s algorithms show personalized postings to students every time they log in. You can start personalizing your Handshake account by:
  • Filling out your profile completely – Handshake will personalize job recommendations based on the details you provide on your profile. Employers use Handshake to search for candidates, and having a complete profile will make it easier for employers to find you. Additionally, your profile will give you access to resources such as career fairs, networking events, and workshops. You can take advantage of all the amazing opportunities Handshake offers by completing your profile.
  •  Personalizing your Notification Preferences — Some notifications are enabled by default when an account is created in Handshake, and you want the default settings to reflect your priorities. This way, you can ensure that key information or job positions aren’t missed.
  • Familiarizing yourself with keyword search and filters — Determine the keywords most relevant to your search. Once you have identified them, you can use them with filters, including CC Connected, to narrow down your search results. It saves time when searching for jobs or events related to your interests.
  •  Creating saved searches — By saving a search, you will be notified when new jobs that meet your search criteria are posted.

While budgeting may not be your first concern when planning for your summer internship (or post-graduate experience), maintaining an effective focus on finances and spending is a crucial life skill. As you consider minimum, or no, wages earned during this period, it can cause stress and uncertainty. The best thing you can do is plan early and adjust often to make this situation manageable.
