Around the Block: CC Adds Caste to Nondiscrimination Policy

CC Adds Caste to Nondiscrimination Policy

As an institution of higher education founded on the principles of equitable access and inclusion, Colorado College is committed to providing students, faculty, and staff with an environment conducive to learning and working where all people are treated with dignity and respect.
In this spirit, CC now includes caste, a system of inherited social class, in its Notice of Nondiscrimination Policy and Equal Employment Opportunity Statement. Discrimination based on caste is now expressly prohibited, just as discrimination based on race, creed, color, religion, national origin, ancestry, sex (including pregnancy, gender identity or gender expression, perceived gender, sexual preference, and sexual orientation), marital status, disability, veteran status, age, genetic information, or any other applicable status protected by federal, state, or local law.
“Recognizing caste and prohibiting caste-based discrimination are critical to the college’s mission to become an inclusive and antiracist institution and to its commitment to ensuring that all students and employees are treated with dignity,” says Purvi Mehta, assistant professor of history, who reached out to the Office of Human Resources, the Diversity and Equity Advisory Board, and Faculty Executive Committee to request this change in CC’s policy.
The updated policy is posted on the Policy and Compliance website. CC was named in a recent Time magazine article highlighting a recent shift by organizations to include caste as a protected category.

2022 MacLean Symposium on Asian American Literature

ID: gold block with words 2022 MacLean Symposium on Asian American Literature
This year’s MacLean Symposium, to be held April 12-14, invites Ma Vang, Mai Der Vang, Divya Victor, Aaron Cohick, and Cathy Park Hong to speak on Asian American literature as forms of racial reckoning. Both as textual representation and self-reflection, literature has been foundational to Asian American studies and, in this critical moment of antiracist initiatives and resistance, it continues to play a vital role in creating dialogue around issues of war, justice, art, and community. In bringing these writers, artists, and thinkers together, the MacLean Symposium aims to amplify Asian American literature and its many points of intervention.

Sponsored by the D.J. MacLean Endowed Fund for English.

The MacLean Symposium is also part of Colorado College’s “Forever Foreign: Asian America, Global Asia, and the Problem of Anti-Asian Racism” series. This year-long event centers the perspectives and voices of the Asian diaspora communities and deepens the ongoing conversations on antiracism. The series is sponsored by the Asian Studies Program; Cultural Attractions Fund; National Endowment for the Humanities; MacLean Fund for the English Department; Department of History; Department of Political Science; Butler Center; Department of Race, Ethnicity, and Migration Studies; Center for Global Education and Field Study; and Feminist and Gender Studies.

Save The Date

Be on the lookout next week for a refreshed look for our Sign into CC website page. A new internal home page for staff, faculty, and students will go live on Tuesday, April 5.

Happenings in the Collaborative for Community Engagement

The Collaborative for Community Engagement is hiring for the 2022-23 academic year. There are open positions on the CCE’s Board of Directors and Issue Organizer teams. CCE interns serve as a co-op and help to guide and direct the work of the office. If you have interest in joining the CCE team next year, head to Handshake to see all open positions.

The CCE is also now accepting nominations for its annual awards ceremony, the Community Engagement Recognition Night. These awards recognize students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community partners who have gone above and beyond in contributing to the public good.

Recipients will be honored at the in-person CERN on May 5 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. in Bemis Hall, which everyone is invited to attend. At CERN, we will celebrate the various ways in which the campus engages in community-based work, democratically invests in shared futures, and develops students into engaged citizens. Drinks and heavy appetizers provided. A (very) light program at 5 p.m. will be followed by an opportunity to mingle, celebrate one another, and peruse the award gallery.

If you know someone who you think should be recognized, please nominate them for an award. To nominate a student, staff/faculty member, or community organization, email cce@coloradocollege.edu with their name, the award, and why you feel they deserve recognition. Full award descriptions can be found on the website. There is no required length for a nomination, but the more descriptive you can be, the better. Nominations must be in by midnight on Monday, April 18.

On April 25, Dustin Fife will become the new college librarian. Fife is currently the director of library services and director of online education at Western Colorado University. He began his career as the library director in the San Juan County Library, and subsequently joined the Utah Valley University as the outreach and patron services librarian before joining Western Colorado University.
“I’m really looking forward to working with Dustin Fife as our new college librarian. During our discussions and interviews, I found Dustin to be someone who is always thinking ahead as to how to best advocate for libraries, library staff, and the faculty, students, and staff that we support and serve,” says Interim Director Steve Lawson.
The dean of the faculty and the library will create opportunities for the campus to meet and welcome Fife in Block 8 and beyond.

50 Days to Commencement: Dr. Margaret A. Liu to Deliver Commencement Address

Dr. Neena Grover is Baccalaureate Speaker

Dr. Neena Grover is Baccalaureate Speaker

Commencement is just 50 days away! Save the date for this annual celebration of graduates, Sunday, May 22, at 8:30 a.m. in Ed Robson Arena on the Colorado College Campus.

We are proud to announce that Dr. Margaret A. Liu, a Colorado College alumna from the Class of 1977 who is renowned in the fields of vaccines, gene delivery, and cancer immunotherapy, will deliver the 2022 Commencement address.
Liu is a Colorado native who graduated summa cum laude from CC in 1977 as a Boettcher Scholar. She pioneered two technologies for cancer and vaccines (bispecific antibodies and DNA vaccines), for which she has received a number of awards internationally, with two honorary doctorates including a D.Sc.hc from Colorado College and an M.D.hc, from the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, where she had been previously invited to lecture by the Nobel committee. She is known as “The Mother of DNA Vaccines,” a technology that also laid foundations for mRNA vaccines. She was the scientific lead for the World Health Organization drafting group for the recently approved WHO guidelines for mRNA vaccines. She passed the Epreuve pour le Diplôme d’Enseignement à l’Unanimité du Jury in piano at L’Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris, also in 1977, and earned an M.D. from Harvard Medical School in 1981. Click here for Liu’s complete bio.
In addition, Dr. Neena Grover, Verner Z. Reed Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, has been selected as the 2022 Baccalaureate speaker. Baccalaureate, an intimate ceremony for graduates and their two invited guests to reflect on the rite of passage of graduation, is scheduled for Saturday, May 21, at 3 p.m. (location TBD). Click here for Grover’s complete bio.
Faculty Registration
Faculty members may now register to march in all Commencement 2022 events, including Honors Convocation (Tuesday, May 10, at 11 a.m. in Celeste Theatre), Baccalaureate, and the Commencement ceremony. Click here to register.
Ticket Information
Each graduate may claim seven total tickets for guests (five in reserved seating, and two standing room only), free of charge, for Commencement in Ed Robson Arena. More instructions for claiming tickets will be forthcoming, and graduates will be able to claim their tickets through the Ticketmaster system at the beginning of May.
Volunteer Opportunities
We’re in need of faculty, staff, and student volunteers to support Commencement events! Serving as a volunteer gets you access to Ed Robson Arena for the ceremony, even if you’re not a ticketed guest of a graduate. Email Nichole Sandoval at nsandoval@coloradocollege.edu for more information and specific opportunities.
A New Venue: Ed Robson Arena
Ed Robson Arena opened its doors in the fall of 2021, serving not only as the first on-campus home for CC hockey, but also as a multipurpose gathering space for campus events and the Colorado Springs community. As the Commencement 2022 venue, Ed Robson Arena offers complete Americans with Disabilities Act accessibility. The state-of-the-art sound system and high-definition video scoreboard screen offer consistent audio, up-close viewing of the stage and speakers, and a clear view of sign language interpreters from all seats. In addition, Robson offers a temperature-controlled environment without the need for a weather contingency plan.
We look forward to celebrating with our graduates in this new space that’s bursting with Tiger pride! Immediately following the ceremony, all graduates, their guests, faculty, and staff are invited to the President’s Reception on Tava Quad.
For additional information about Commencement 2022 activities, visit the event homepage.
