Last week, the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College held an “Action Words virtual discussion” about the current theatre production “By the Way, Meet Vera Stark” with CC’s Director and Associate Professor of Feminist and Gender Studies Dr. Heidi R. Lewis and students of her Feminist Theory course. The group discussed how various feminist theoretical frameworks might influence interpretations of the show. A recording can be accessed here

The “Actions Words” series is a FAC Connect program devoted to conversation and literary arts that respond to social issues and collective conversation. “By the Way, Meet Vera Stark” runs through March 20 and tickets start at $20. The final performance on March 20 will be followed by a talkback with cast and director Betty Hart.

Nine CC Students Named Fulbright Semifinalists

Since 1949, 55 Colorado College students have been named Fulbright grantees; this year, nine students are waiting to hear if they will join their ranks in the prestigious program.
The semifinalists are:
  • Kathryn Barnes ’19, study award in computer science to Hungary
  • Samantha Caro ’22, research award in economics and mathematics to Norway
  • Nick Cleveland-Stout ’22, research award in international relations to Brazil
  • Grace Evans ’22, English Teaching Assistant award to Greenland
  • Mabel Gardner ’22, English Teaching Assistant award to Spain
  • Claire McCallum ’22, English Teaching Assistant award to Germany
  • Sophie Pelletier ’22, English Teaching Assistant award to Mexico
  • Isabelle Smith ’21, research award in political science to Senegal
  • Tia Vierling ’22, English Teaching Assistant award to Kenya
“Our students are genuinely interested in connecting with the world, and these semifinalists exemplify that in practice,” says Roy Jo Sartin, CC’s Fulbright adviser since 2015. “All of their proposed Fulbright projects, from graduate study to independent research to English language teaching, will allow them to engage meaningfully not only with their own passions, but also with the peoples and cultures of their chosen host countries.”
“The goal of the Fulbright program is to create mutual understanding between nations through person-to-person cultural exchange, and thus all countries that participate in the program do so as equal partners with the U.S. State Department. This philosophy resonates strongly with CC students,” Sartin says.
She explains that the Fulbright program receives about 10,000 applications every year and bestows about 2,000 awards.
For information about the application process, email Sartin at rsartin@coloradocollege.edu.

From pre-med major at CC studying molecular biology to songwriter, producer, artist, and singer, Jeremy Zucker ’18 will embark on a world tour starting in July. Zucker — who describes his music as “alt/indie-pop” — admits he never considered music as a viable career path. “That’s why I decided to study molecular biology. I’ve always said that science is my interest and music is my passion. And no matter how many hours I was studying, I always found my way to my makeshift studio in the basement of Mathias.” Learn more about Zucker in the latest edition of the Bulletin.
