Announcing Title IX Working Group

Dear Campus Community,

 
Each of us plays an important role in creating a safe environment for all students, staff, and faculty. Doing so requires us to understand and follow the college’s policies and procedures, which means that those policies and procedures should not only reflect shared values but also be understandable and easy to navigate. 
 
After hearing from members of the campus community about our interim Title IX Policy and Procedures and our Nondiscrimination and Antiharassment Policy,  I have asked a broadly representative group to address questions and suggestions from students, staff, and faculty before the policies and procedures become final. You can review and comment on both of these policies now through the end of Block 5.
 
The Title IX and Nondiscrimination Policy Working Group will develop recommendations for how both policies can operate effectively. While both policies ensure compliance with federal antidiscrimination and Title IX regulations, they also reflect CC’s commitment to equity, inclusion, and the creation of a learning and work climate where all members of the community are welcome and can thrive.   
 
The working group will develop their recommendations after engaging with the campus community, understanding state and federal regulations, researching best practices in higher education, and considering the college’s current processes and resources. The working group will be in contact to collect input and update the campus community on progress.

Survey about racial climate on campus closes on Nov. 9

This message was sent to all students today, reminding them to take the National Assessment of Collegiate Campus Climates survey, which is open until Nov. 9. If you can, please encourage students to take the survey. Their answers will help inform the Antiracism Implementation Plan, including new initiatives. Similar surveys will be conducted for staff in Spring 2022 and for faculty in Spring 2023.

This new volunteer opportunity is a chance for you to share your perspective and first-person experience to help inform CC’s strategic communications. 
 
Members of the council will work directly with the Office of Communications team to incorporate your student experience into storytelling across all of our communications channels. Council members also will contribute insights on how the institutional communications efforts impact the day-to-day lives of students.

Are you looking for more ways to meaningfully interact with your food and the environment? Join the CC Student Farm! Students work on the farm to create a small-scale, hand-powered, sustainable agricultural space that builds community through farming and generates fresh produce for students and community members. Getting involved on the farm is a great way to interact with nature without leaving campus, take your mind off the stress of academics, and learn about sustainable agriculture while getting your hands dirty. The CC Student Farm is a space for anyone interested in engaging more with the land their food comes from — no experience necessary! The club meets at 4 p.m. Thursdays at the farm (in the backyard of Stewart House, 1228 Wood Ave). Look Out for Food Pantry and Swap Space Job Opportunities During Block 3

CC’s Food Pantry and Swap Space is seeking students passionate about food access and reducing consumption to fill two part-time (5-10 hours per week) positions. Upon re-opening in Worner, the FPSS will serve the student population to meet basic needs (food, hygiene, and cleaning items) while working to reduce unnecessary consumption by giving items a second life within the CC community. Highly organized and responsible individuals with customer service skills should apply to the FPSS student worker or FPSS student manager positions once posted on Handshake.

COP26

This year’s United Nations Climate Change Conference runs from Oct. 31-Nov. 12. The 26th Conference of the Parties, taking place in Glasgow, Scotland, will host tens of thousands of climate experts, representatives, policymakers, and citizens to discuss the state of our climate. The aim of COP26 is to reach international agreements on goals such as global net zero emissions, ecosystem conservation, environmental justice, and climate financing. Representatives from almost every country on the planet will attend to renew their commitment to addressing the climate crisis — and the world will be watching.

There’s still time! President’s Leadership Awards

Now is the time to honor individuals or groups who have made a difference in your life and the lives of others at CC.

As part of our strategic initiative to foster workplace excellence, it’s important to recognize those who are making a difference. 

There is still time to submit nominations for the President’s Leadership Awards. The President’s Leadership Awards Program recognizes colleagues who make an impact as strong leaders, innovative role models, and positive collaborators. 
Submit nominations now through the end of Block 3. The deadline to submit nominations is November 19, 2021. Previous winners were nominated by faculty or staff colleagues.
Check out examples of winning nominations to help inspire you in drafting a stand-out submission. Tips include telling a detailed story about the person or group and how they demonstrated the qualities of the award namesake, the college’s leadership philosophy, and CC’s antiracism efforts.
Nominate a deserving colleague or team of individuals, based on the following criteria:
  • Brian Young Community Service Award: This awardee demonstrates a continued pattern of voluntary service to the college and exceeding their job duties, as demonstrated by former Vice President for Information Technology Brian Young. The awardee must have been employed by the college for five years or more. Submit a nomination.
  • Victor Nelson-Cisneros Diversity and Inclusion Award: This awardee exemplifies the qualities of former Associate Dean of the College Victor Nelson-Cisneros in supporting diversity and inclusion on campus. Submit a nomination.
  • Glenn Brooks Innovation and Courage Award: This awardee displays the courage and innovative qualities of former Dean of the College/Dean of the Faculty Glenn Brooks, who was one of the founders of the Block Plan. Submit a nomination.
  • Jane Cauvel Cultivating Collaboration and Community-building Award: This awardee cultivates collaboration on campus and is a community-builder, as exemplified by Jane Cauvel, professor of philosophy emerita, and the college’s first ombudsperson. Submit a nomination.
Winners each year will receive: $2,500 cash prize, a feature on the President’s Leadership Awards website, and a leadership trophy to display for a full year. Winners will be announced in Block 5. The individuals who submit winning nominations will also be recognized.

Ongoing Screening Testing with eMed

Colorado College

Dear Campus Community, 


COVID-19 testing technology has evolved rapidly since Fall 2020. Our weekly screening testing program has enabled us to effectively interrupt chains of infection early, prevent outbreaks, and engage in in-person learning. The introduction of fast, accurate, and convenient antigen tests has made self-monitoring for COVID-19 more convenient and widely available.  
 
Starting in the second half of November, we plan to partner with eMed, a telehealth provider, whose certified guides supervise via telehealth sessions self-administered BinaxNow tests. eMed provides results within 15 minutes via an app (Navica). As an added benefit, these results can also be used for travel, and eMed will report results to the county health department (per state requirements) and CC.
 
Antigen tests (not to be confused with antibody tests) detect COVID-19 infections very reliably during the infectious period, making them an excellent tool for screening testing. Their tendency not to pick up prior infections after recovery will help to reduce isolation needs. CC students who have tried out these self-administered at-home tests found them convenient to use and less unpleasant. Of course, no test is perfect. Because some false positive results are to be expected, all positive antigen test results are followed up by a molecular test at the Student Health Center. Testing protocols will remain the same and can be adjusted as the course of the pandemic requires. 
 
eMed will provide screening testing to vaccinated students (a percentage each week), unvaccinated students (twice weekly), and unvaccinated employees. The Student Health Center will continue providing molecular Abbott ID Now tests for symptomatic COVID-19 testing, testing after exposure, and follow-up testing to positive antigen tests.
 
We will be in touch with more information regarding test kit distribution and the Navica app next week.

Sexual Assault Forum Canceled

Dear Campus Community,

We are following up on the message we sent on Tuesday about sexual assault support and resources. Upon hearing concerns from students, we are taking a step back to reconsider how best to approach listening to student needs and providing information and support.
 
The forum that was initially planned for Monday, Nov. 1, is canceled. We are in discussions with the Student Title IX Assistance and Resource Team, the Student Organization for Sexual Safety, CC Student Government Association, and other student groups and individuals, and will provide an update on next steps soon.
 
These issues and communications may have brought up feelings such as anxiety, trauma, or hurt. If you need support, please contact the sexual assault response coordinatorSTART, or turn to the college’s other support resources.

Office of Academic Programs
  • Sam Stansel has been hired as a coordinator for the Office of Academic Programs
  • Aaron Stoller has been promoted to assistant vice provost of first-year student success and director of the Office of Academic Programs
Office of Accessibility Resources
  • Kimberly Chevalier is now full-time with Accessibility Resources and has been promoted to accommodation support coordinator
Career Center
  • The Career Center now reports to the Office of the Vice Provost
Center for Global Education and Field Study
  • Belinda Barrientos has transferred from the Center for Global Education and Field Study to the Student Opportunities and Advising Hub
  • Shiyanke Goonetilleke has been hired by the Student Opportunities and Advising Hub as a student support specialist – global education emphasis; he continues to serve in a split position between our two offices. We anticipate he will take on a new role at the Hub by the end of the calendar year, at which time he will be fully engaged with the Hub alone
  • Global Education and Field Study is currently engaged in a search for a new off-campus programs coordinator
Colket Center for Academic Excellence
  • Traci Freeman, former director of the Colket Center, has accepted a position at Endicott College in Beverly, Massachusetts, as dean of the new Endicott Center for Teaching and Learning and associate professor of English 
  • Katrina (Kat) Bell, former director of the Ruth Barton Writing Center, has moved to San Diego, California
  • Chris Schacht has been promoted to interim director of the Writing Center
  • Karen Chui, professional tutor in the Writing Center, has been promoted to full-time status
Collaborative for Community Engagement 
  • Richard Bishop has moved to Summer Session as an administrative assistant
  • Tyra Voget joined CCE this summer as the civic leadership program coordinator
  • Sarah Elsey has been hired as the student engagement coordinator
Office of the Registrar
  • Christine Brett has been promoted to services and curriculum management coordinator
  • Ashley Nicholas has been promoted to applications and communications manager
  • Karen West,  academic records assistant, has been promoted to full-time status

State of the Rockies Project
  • Katrina (Kat) Miller-Stevens, associate professor of economics and business, is the new director of the State of the Rockies Project. We wish to thank Corina McKendry, associate professor of political science, and director of the Environmental Studies Program, for her service as the previous director of the State of the Rockies Project
Student Opportunities and Advising Hub
  • Shiyanke Goonetilleke has transferred to the Student Opportunities and Advising Hub as student support specialist – global education emphasis. He continues to serve in a split position between Global Education and the Hub
  • Nicola Brooke has transferred to the Hub as student support specialist, fellowship coordinator
