Funding for New Colorado FAMLI Program
As you may know, in November 2020 Colorado voters approved Proposition 118, which resulted in the implementation of the Family and Medical Leave Insurance Program. This program, which takes effect in January 2024, makes paid family and medical leave benefits available to most Colorado employees who have a qualifying condition and who earned $2,500 over the previous year for work performed in Colorado.

The FAMLI program is funded through premiums paid by both workers and employers, starting in January 2023. The premiums through 2024 are set to 0.9% of the employees’ wages.

Accordingly, most Colorado employees will see a FAMLI premium deduction on their pay stubs beginning Jan. 1, 2023. However, CC has elected not to put this monetary burden on its faculty, staff, and student employees.  Instead CC intends to cover the entire amount of the premiums through 2023, at a total cost of $600,000 to the college. It should be noted that the funding for this program may impact the amount available to be allocated to salary increases in 2023.

This is an opportunity to strengthen our community by honoring Dr. King’s legacy of non-violence, service, equity, justice, peace, respect, and inclusion. Each year, on the federally designated holiday, we gather to recommit ourselves to this mission and ignite attendees’ passion for serving the region throughout the year.

Gathering in Solidarity and Healing for Club Q

Dear Campus Community,


As we welcome the possibilities of a new block amid a time of slowing down and reflection, we invite you to gather with us in community as we process the tragedies of the past week and stand in solidarity and healing. 

We join in the Colorado Springs community’s invitation to cover the city in rainbows. As a sign of solidarity with our LGBTQIA+ community, we invite you to do this in your own space by hanging symbols of pride, love, and inclusion that may be meaningful to you. If you do not have one, please feel free to print this image.

All of the opportunities listed below are open to all members of our Colorado College community: students, faculty, and staff, including our colleagues at Bon Appetit, Sodexo, the bookstore, and any other affiliations.

Join us for a Healing Circle this Thursday, Dec. 1, at 4:30 p.m. on Worner Quad. We will raise the Pride Flag, share affirmations for hope and healing, and hear stories from friends and colleagues. If you would like to participate in the program by sharing a word, a song, poem, or reflection, please complete this sign up form by Wednesday, Nov. 30, at noon.

After the Healing Circle, you may join us to bring your remembrances to the Club Q memorial from 6:30-7:30 p.m. A limited number of spaces for those who need a ride are available by signing up here.

Ongoing LGBTQIA+ community spaces are available through the Rainbow Labyrinth, Butler Center Queer and Trans Collective, and the Collaborative for Community Engagement Gender and Sexuality Coalition.

This week, there are also a variety of additional opportunities to engage if that feels supportive to you:

  • Rainbow Labyrinth (Queer Spirituality Group) – Tuesday, Nov. 29, 7:30 p.m. in Sacred Grounds
  • Sound Healing – Wednesday, Nov. 30, 4-5 p.m. in Shove Memorial Chapel
  • Grief Support Group – Wednesday, Nov. 30, 7 p.m. in Sacred Grounds

You may also stop by one of the locations below to create an image, a poem, or write a note of encouragement and solidarity between now and Thursday afternoon. Art supplies, writing utensils, and paper are provided in these spaces:

Steiner

Visiting Artist: Peter Steiner, trombone


The Colorado College Music Department welcomes trombonist Peter Steiner for a performance and masterclass on Monday, Dec. 5, in Packard Hall, and as a guest soloist with the CC Concert Band on Tuesday, Dec. 6, in Celeste Theatre, Cornerstone Arts Center.
Both visiting artist events are free and open to the public. Monday’s performance with Steiner and pianist Constanze Hochwartner begins at 3:30 p.m., followed immediately by the masterclass. Tuesday’s Concert Band Concert features a South American music theme beginning at 7:30 p.m., and the band will accompany Steiner for the world premiere of the wind ensemble version of Dimitri Cervo’s Trombone Concerto.
Steiner and Hochwartner have also been invited for an hour of casual conversation with students at the Max Kade House during the CC German Program’s blockly Kaffeestunde event at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7.
About Steiner
Steiner’s playing has been described as “beautifully controlled with a vocal sound” and he is recognized around the world as “a new trombone star within his generation” who “plays with total control.” He was a 2019 Prize Winner at the XVI International Tchaikovsky Competition in Russia. At the age of 23, Steiner was appointed Trombonist of the Vienna State Opera and Vienna Philharmonic for the 2016-2017 season. Prior to that engagement he served as Principal Trombonist with the Colorado Symphony for the 2014-2015 season. He has performed as guest trombonist with the Munich Philharmonic, Staatskapelle Dresden, New York Philharmonic, Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Seattle Symphony Orchestra and BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.

Central City Opera will perform Amahl and the Night Visitors on the CC campus at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11 in Mohrman Theatre, Armstrong Hall. Amahl and the Night Visitors, an opera in one act with words and music by Gian Carlo Menotti, tells the story of a magic star, a shepherd boy, and how unselfish love can work miracles. Experience the magic of this family-friendly opera performed with a full orchestra. Performance locations also include Denver and Boulder. 
The production features CC performance faculty Jennifer DeDominici and Jonathan Hays in lead roles for all performances, and CC Chamber Chorus and Vocal Studio students making up the show’s choir for the Colorado Springs performance.

ICYMI: First-time Collaboration Between Music Department and Theatre Workshop Produces “Rocky Horror”

The Colorado College Music Department and the Student Theatre Workshop produced four sold-out shows of “The Rocky Horror Show” through a first-time collaboration at the end of October.
While it wasn’t easy, it was definitely worth it.

Grace, with Quattro Mani, premieres Lerdahl’s new cycle for two pianos
The Music Department’s associate chair, artist-in-residence, and senior lecture, Susan Grace, was busy in November. Grace performed with duo partner Steven Beck as part of the premiere of Fred Lerdahl’s new cycle for two pianos: Embedded Loops, Inner Life, and Solitude.
Quattro Mani performed the world premiere Nov. 9 at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in Bezanson Recital Hall, and they performed the New York City premiere Nov. 21 at the Klavierhaus.
