Changes in Leadership and Structure

Dear CC Community,

Today, I write to share some important news about a leadership change and reorganization of two key offices at Colorado College.

Todd Woodward, Vice President of Strategic Communications and Marketing, has decided to pursue a new opportunity leading marketing and communications at Louisiana State University, which includes eight institutions and colleges educating more than 55,000 students. I am thrilled for him and wish him the best in his new role. Todd’s leadership at CC has been invaluable. He helped us make significant strides in building the brand and visibility of CC and supporting strategic planning efforts for divisions across the college. He and his team also enhanced relationships and workflow with campus partners. 

Based on input from Project 2024 and other campus constituencies, we have been reflecting on our organizational structure and how we can align our resources and talents in a more strategic way. At the same time, the Communications and Marketing team has worked closely with the Office of Advancement to tie college priorities to funding and alumni engagement opportunities. 

With Todd’s departure, we will build on this important collaboration by merging the Office of Communications and Marketing with the Office of Advancement. This change will enable us to share the Colorado College story more effectively with internal and external audiences, streamline our engagement efforts, and capitalize on opportunities to communicate our vision, values, and achievements to the entire CC community. It will help us fulfill our commitments to build diversity across the income spectrum, create equity across the CC experience, and ensure post-graduate success. We are also confident that combining these teams will strengthen the connections between our alumni and the college, resulting in more engagement and financial support.

A reorganization like this is only possible because of the leadership, initiative, and talents of the staff within these remarkable teams. We are fortunate that these offices already share a strong and collaborative relationship.  

We will soon embark on a nationwide search to identify a new Vice President for Institutional Advancement and Communications to support this integrated team. In the meantime, under the interim leadership of Stephanie Wurtz, we will continue to support the ongoing work of Advancement, Admissions, and Communications and Marketing — including our branding, visibility, fundraising, and engagement efforts, as well as the critical services the office provides to campus partners.

I want to express my gratitude to Todd Woodward for his dedication and the tremendous impact he has had on CC. I also look forward to the opportunities that lie ahead in this new structure, as we plan for the college’s 150th anniversary and form the building blocks of a new fundraising campaign.

Half Block Registeration


Half Block Registration is open from October 2nd at 8:30 a.m. to December 4th at 5 p.m. Students can participate in the Wall Street Prep in-person session or an online Kaplan test prep session for a very low cost! This is a wonderful opportunity to explore your interests and gain professional knowledge and skills. Registration is through SUMMIT.

Colorado College Activism Insitute

Program Dates: May 28 – July 14, 2024
This .25-credit mentored internship program is an opportunity for students to engage in activist and/or advocacy work that aims to confront escalating surveillance and criminalization of BIPOC (Black, indigenous and people of color) communities by collaborating directly with community-based organizations in the U.S. Southwest (Denver, Albuquerque, and El Paso, Austin, and San Marcos, Texas).

The program is open to all current first-years, sophomores, and juniors at Colorado Colleges, all schools in the Associated Colleges of the Midwest, and other select colleges. Application and interview are required. This program requires full-time work commitment. For more information email the Program Director, Dr. Eric Popkin, at

Student Research and Internship Symposium

Date: Thursday, October 12, 2023; 3-5:30 p.m.
Location: Cornerstone Arts Center, Room Main Space 1

The Student Research and Internship Symposium celebrates SCoRe (Summer Collaborative Research) and Internship participants in a culminating event to share their summer experiences. It brings the CC community together for a series of short presentations, poster sessions, and discussions across a variety of academic disciplines.

Finance Symposium

Date: Wednesday, October 11, 2023; 4-6 p.m.

Learn about finance by connecting with alumni and recruiters! This event will allow students to better understand the hiring process for finance opportunities, how they can develop necessary skills for finance opportunities, and how to effectively develop and utilize a network. Professional business dress is expected.

The President’s Leadership Awards Are Back!

The President’s Leadership Awards Are Back!

Do you know someone worthy of a Heartwood Trophy? The Heartwood Trophies, previously known as the President’s Leadership Awards, are ready to be handed off to a new set of honorees. It’s time again to submit your nominations!
 
An honoree is a colleague, or group of colleagues, who make an impact as strong leaders, innovative role models, and positive collaborators. They’ve made a difference in your life and the lives of others at CC. Many colleagues do amazing work on stage and behind the scenes. This is an opportunity to honor all the unique contributions, especially those that are not always seen. 
 
Say, you do know a person or two?! Submit your nominations now through Nov. 3, 2023, by the stroke of midnight (11:59 p.m. MST)! In a community full of remarkable leaders, the four Heartwood Trophies seek those who remind us of the original honorees and inspirations of the awards: Brian Young’s Community Service Award, Victor Nelson-Cisneros’ Diversity and Inclusion Award, Glenn Brooks’ Innovation and Courage Award, and Jane Cauvel’s Cultivating Collaboration and Community-building Award.
 
The Presidential Leadership Awards Program is run by the President’s Division with the help of the ADEI Leadership Team and the community. We remain committed to ensuring equitable practices are at the forefront – from the nominations to the selection process. The President’s Division will continue to welcome feedback to evaluate and improve the program as we all work together to institutionalize our ADEI commitment.

Recycle Your E-Waste
Office of Sustainability

    Enhancing Educational Experiences within the Office of the Dean of the College

Waste Team Plant Exchange

Plant Exchange is a program launched by our Waste Team at the Office of Sustainability (OOS). The aim of the program is to educate students about the many benefits of plants and encourage the presence of house plants across CC’s residential spaces. Last week, our waste team hosted the first Plant Exchange at the OOS. The event was met with great enthusiasm from the campus community, and all the available plants were sold out in less than an hour. To join the program, students signed an agreement confirming their participation and responsibility for the plant’s care. This was to ensure responsible and sustainable plant sharing among our community.

Campus Compost Program

Are you interested in building sustainable habits at your residence? If so, sign up for the Campus Compost Program today! Founded in Spring 2021, the Campus Compost Program gives students the opportunity to learn about composting by supplying compost buckets, training, and a guide! This is a great opportunity to learn how to adequately use, properly empty, and thoroughly clean your compost bucket. To get your compost bucket, which is good for food waste, paper towels, wooden utensils, and food-soiled paper products, fill out this form.

E-Waste Recycling

Do you have e-waste you need to recycle? Look no further! The E-Waste Recycling Program is committed to responsibly recycling e-waste at a local Colorado Springs facility that works to find responsible ways to reuse old electronics in an environmentally safe way. If you have a small amount of e-waste to recycle, please bring it to one of our three locations, including Worner Campus Center, Tutt Library, or the OOS. If you have a large amount of e-waste, please fill out the survey to request a drop-off. Or stop by the E-Waste drop-off event on Thursday, October 5th, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the garage bays next to Breton Hall.

Meet the Team: CC Exchange 

CC Exchange is a program run by the OOS that focuses on waste reduction through the donation and recycling of used items to build a sustainable CC community. It also works in collaboration with the CC Pantry to help students access essential food items for free. For the current academic year, we have a team of three interns leading the CC Exchange:
  • Malia Rivera’24 is a senior majoring in Environmental Studies. She enjoys her time at the CC Exchange, relishing the physical space and various campus partnerships. 
  • Paige Simenz’24 is a senior majoring in Environmental Science. She likes to work together with the team to maintain a welcoming environment for the CC community. She is currently working on the fall pop-up events!
  • Kate Lamkin’24 is a senior majoring in Environmental Science. She began working for the CC Exchange, about two years ago. She has experienced how the physical space has changed over the years and has also developed inspiring relationships with several CC partners (on and off-campus). 

Recap of Block 1:

East Campus Open House and Welcome Back Fair! 
The Office of Sustainability (OOS) welcomed incoming students during two campus events last block: the East Campus Open House held at Donald E. Autrey Field and the Welcome Back Fair hosted at the Worner Center. Our Sustainability Coordinator, Mae Rohrbach, alongside the interns, introduced students to the work the OOS does around campus, and the opportunities available to them to actively engage with that work. 

CO Water Tour

As part of our Sense of Place program, students went on a CO Water Tour to explore and gain valuable insights into the intricate infrastructure of reservoirs and pipelines that supply water to Colorado Springs from the surrounding mountains. During this tour, students and staff had the chance to visit Mt. Princeton Hot Springs and Hoosier Pass as well as other locations. The Sense of Place trips are designed to recognize Colorado’s complex geography and raise community awareness about our natural surroundings.
