2023 SUMMER BLOCKS AWAY<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Every year Colorado College faculty propose summer courses that take students across the country and around the world.  Each year is different, with some repeating courses and some new opportunities, and 2023 is no exception.  We have 10 courses approved for Summer 2023 that will take students from Bali to Berlin, and from rural Kenya to the heart of LA.  Check out these courses, all of which will open their applications on Summit on December 1, the day of our Summer Blocks Away Fair in the Worner Center lobby.  <\/span><\/span> <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

BERLIN, GERMANY<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

FG214: Hidden Spaces, Hidden Narratives:  Intersectionality Studies in Berlin<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Led by Prof. Heidi Lewis, this course takes students to the German capital to examine the experiences of marginalized people and communities. Offered in Block A.  Crosslisted as GR220 and RM200.<\/p>\n

ROME, ITALY<\/span><\/span><\/strong> <\/p>\n

CL223:  Greek & Roman Art<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Survey the art, architecture, archaeology, and history of Greece and Rome with Prof. Sanjaya Thakur and Prof. Richard Buxton.  This course will visit Rome as it explores the political and social factors in the formation and utilization of Classical forms in both ancient and modern times.  Offered in Block A.  Crosslisted as AH207 and HY200. <\/span><\/p>\n

ROME & PALERMO, ITALY<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

ED 250: Constructing Childhood in Montessori, Reggio Emilia, and Steiner Schools<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Join Prof. NIckie Coomer in an exploration of how childhood is imagined in these three progressive pedagogical models, visiting elementary schools where each was developed.  Offered in Block A.<\/span><\/p>\n

MAASAILAND, KENYA<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

PH203: Kenya’s Maasailand: Indigeneity in the Postcolonial British Commonwealth<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

This program will take CC students, led by Prof. Alberto Hernandez-Lemus, to the Dopoi Center, adjacent to the Maasai Mara Natural Preserve in Southwest Kenya to explore the complex relationship between Indigenous communities and the State under colonial and postcolonial conditions.  Offered in Block A. <\/p>\n

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

EN225\/401: Shakespeare in London<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Join Prof. Steven Hayward in London and Stratford as you look at the works of Shakespeare and his contemporaries, experience productions of their works, and explore the cities and countryside where Shakespeare lived and wrote. Offered in Block A.<\/p>\n

BALI, INDONESIA<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

MU222: The Arts & Culture of Bali<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Prof. Liz Macy and Prof. Made Lasmawan help you explore the arts and culture of this unique Indonesian island. Music, dance, theater and the visual arts align with the unique history and culture of Bali.  Students will experience Balinese arts and culture through participation in daily life, attendance at a wide range of performances, and lecture-demonstrations by a variety of artists and craftsmen.  This is a 1-block course that spans dates in blocks A and B. Crosslisted as PA250. <\/span> <\/p>\n

GALILEE, ISRAEL<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

RE215: Excavating Israel<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

This course, led by Prof. Pamela Reaves, centers on student participation in archaeological excavations at Shikhin, an ancient Jewish village in Galilee.  Through field experiences, students will gain training in essential methods and theories of archaeology as well as insights into the history, culture, politics, and economics of the region during the Hellenistic and Roman periods.  This is a 1-block course that spans dates in blocks A and B.  Crosslisted as AN208, CL222, or HY200. <\/span> <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

SORIA, SPAIN<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

SP111\/SP211\/SP305\/SP306<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

A two block, two unit program in collaboration with the Centro Internacional Antonio Machado in Soria, a small city in central Castile, birthplace of the Spanish language. Students live with families, participate in city life during two blocks, and have excursions to larger Spanish cities like San Sebastian and Madrid.  Led by Prof. Carrie Ruiz, this program is a two-block program in both blocks A and B. <\/span><\/p>\n

TOKYO, MT. FUJI, KYOTO, AND HIROSHIMA, JAPAN<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

JA350: Food in Japanese Culture and Literature<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Prof. Joan Ericson and Prof. James Matson lead a course which focuses on the intersection of Japanese culture, food, and literature. The topics will range from food production and consumption to religious and artistic representations and the construction of cultural identities. Offered in Block B.  Crosslisted as PA250.<\/span><\/p>\n

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

FM200: Comedy in Los Angeles: Stand-Up, Spectacle, and Writing the Body into Culture<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Prof. Scott Krzych leads a course which will examine histories, theories, and techniques of comedic performance, placing special emphasis on stand-up comedy as a mode of cultural critique.  Explore the LA comedy scene, including underground comedy, open-mic nights, improv troupes, and professional stand-up shows at venues like The Comedy Store and The Laugh Factory.  Offered in Block B. <\/span><\/p>\n

After the Fair (2pm) on December 1st, stick around for a Global Ed sponsored World Cup Watch Party.  It will be Spain v. Japan projected on the big screen in the WES room downstairs in Worner.  Snacks representing both cultures will be provided by the faculty leading our summer programs in both Japan and Spain.  During the halftime break we will have a Q&A about these two programs as well as any other study abroad questions you may have. <\/span><\/span> <\/p>\n

APPLY FOR SUMMER BLOCKS AWAY<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The application window on the Global Education Summit site will run from December 1st through January 31st.  Faculty will select students for all summer blocks away during this period and all students approved for a summer block will be reviewed for a possible aid award of up to 90% of the total program cost (program fee plus airfare expenses).  <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Some programs will close after the January 31st deadline, and aid may not be available to late applicants, so it is a great idea to research the programs in December and apply as soon as you have made your choice. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n

The official kick-off of the recruitment and application period for all 2023-2024 academic year blocks begins on February 9th with the Study Away Fair. Some programs may begin advertising in January, but February 9th represents your best chance to learn about blocks away as well as semesters abroad as we host a dual fair, with both types of study abroad represented.  The Fair will again be in the Worner Center lobby and will kick off the application period for all 2023-2024 Blocks Away.  The Application Window runs from February 9th through  March 22nd, so head to the Fair or to the Global Education website in February to explore all the options for next year. <\/span> <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n
